During the First World War, Colonel Meinertzhagen, an Englishman, was on Lord Allenby's staff in the Middle East; later he was successively a member of the Peace Delegation, Chief Political Officer in Palestine, and military adviser to the Middle East Department of the British Colonial Office. In these various roles he played an important part in the initiation and difficult early evolution of the Palestine Mandate and conceived a strong sympathy towards the Zionist movement. The jacket has speckly stains on the front, some mild edge wear, and a lightly tanned spine, but is essentially intact. Richard Meinertzhagen (1878-1967) was a British intelligence officer and ornithologist influential in the formation of the modern state of Israel. Though once regarded as a military hero, many of his claims of heroism, as well as his purported ornithological discoveries, have been called into doubt or refuted.

The author was on Allenby's staff in World War I and knew Lawrence and Weizmann, as well as all the other important persons and writes of the area with considerable knowledge and insight, with sections on peace conference, colonial office, the mandate, Israel, Suez, etc, and with an epilogue. He had earlier written the acclaimed Birds of Arabia, Birds of Egypt and Kenya Diary. This first US edition is in slightly larger format than the London edition.
