Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Maurice Sendak (illustrator). NOT a library discard; privately owned. This EARLY PRINTING was published by Harper & Brothers about 1960 or earlier! Hardback book with dust jacket. The price-clipped jacket has a few small chips/tears and some age-toning to the flaps. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Oversized children's book. Pictorial front cover with maroon cloth spine. The Spine has no lettering at all on it. Rear cover maroon paper. Some very mild shelfwear at bottom edge, only visible from beneath. No DJ. Title page undated. Copyright page (opposite title page, not overleaf) dated only 1959, with LOC number and no ISBN. Green endpapers. Illustrated throughout, with early Sendak. Inside back cover has a quarter circle of watermark about 3 inches radius from the bottom of the inside cover. If you cover the high-tide line, there is no difference in color on the endpapers. A very slight water-ripple to a final few pages -- we did not notice it at all until finding the stain on the inside cover and then working backwards. Hanrahan bibliography A36 does not offer First Printing ID for copy without DJ - although 'Harper & Brothers' was a short-lived moniker; they became Harper & Company in 1962.
