Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First edition hardcover, published by Houghton Mifflin, 1902. John Fiske was a popular writer on Philosophy and History, publishing several books on early American History and several works of his interpretation of Charles Darwin's theories of Evolution. This is his history of the early history of the New England and 'New France' regions, with a strong focus on the history of the Quebec areas and the other areas of Canada first settled by the French. 378 pages with Index, color map at the frontispiece, with five b&w maps through the text. Several pages at the end of the book listing the other works by Fiske. No former ownership marks, no writing on the text pages. One of the pages of the Table of Contents has a 1" tear at the fore edge - most likely due to separating the pages for reading by the original owner. A few of the pages at the beginning of the book are uncut. There is a number ink stamped on the back paste-down - a four digit number in red ink. Not certain what the number refers to, there is no evidence that this is a former library discard copy. Red cloth covered cover boards, with the title imprinted on the spine. There are two small fold marks on the spine at the title, about 1/2" long - appears to be a production issue - the covering had this fold when the title was printed on the spine panel. Cover boards are flat, minor dots of edge wear to the head and heel of the spine and the tips of the corners. Gilt top edge is intact and bright, fore edge gas a few small dots of age tanning. Binding is tight and square. Attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
