Item Description: G & C Merriam Co, Springfield, Massachusetts, 1936. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 5th or later Edition. xxvi, pp 1-1726 Webster's Collegiate Dictionary in a presentation edition for the author George Bernard Shaw. This most unusual association copy has 'George B Shaw' embossed in gilt on the front board. On the front endpaper is a bookplate that states 'Presented with the Compliments of the Publishers G & C Merriam Company Springfield Massachusetts to [typed] Mr . George B. Shaw. [printing resumes] This is one of the copies of the First 500 Printed of the Fifth Edition of Webster's Collegiate Dictionary July, 1936'. Beneath the typed name, 'George B. Shaw' there appears the signature of someone who may be 'Georgiana Shaw'. Unfortunately nothing is known about this presentation volume but it seems self-evident that Merriam Co sent it to Shaw, who was at the time one of the most famous writers in the world, as a promotional stunt. The book was acquired by Modernfirsteditions at a bookfair in the UK but without further information as to provenance. It is in good condition only. The boards are worn and faded - including the gilt 'George B Shaw' embossed on the front. Internally the book is complete but has been well used. The front hinge is cracked although the binding remains sound. There are marks on both front and rear endpapers where tape has been removed, presumably from an earlier attempt to protect the volume with some kind of covering. Please contact Christian White at Modernfirsteditions if you would like more details about this intriguing volume. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 001216
