Item Description: R(obert) Desilver, Philadelphia, 1824. Pamphlet First Printing. Book Condition: G. First Edition. The United States national almanac. 1825. :Comprising calculations for the latitudes and meridians of the northern, southern, and western states; with a variety of public information and interesting Masonic matter; together with the merchant's & traveller's directory, or, a table of the principal roads and distances throughout the United States. : Selected in order to be extensively useful throughout the country, to residents and travellers. /David M'Clure; Robert Desilver; Clement Clarke Moore1825, 1824English Book Book 56 p., [2] folded leaves of plates ; 23 cm.Philadelphia: : R. Desilver, 110, Walnut Street., 1825. (Printed in August, 1824).8 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches, lacking any cover wrappers, and removed from a bound volume at some point; but complete otherwise in 56 pages and with the two folding plates. There is a closed tear to leaf 7/8 and the almanac shows toning and old staining - but is fairly well preserved. The large folding frontis engraving is 17 3/4 by 20 inches, shows separations at the folds and heavy foxing but is in Good condition. On page 40 is the earliest "book" printing of Clement C. Moore's, "Account of a visit from St. Nicholas," which is preceded by a paragraph of introduction beginning,"We know not to whom we are indebted for the following description of that unwearied patron of children - that homely but delightful, personification of parental kindness - Santa Claus. but from whomsoever it may have come, we give thanks." Moore's poem was published anonymously in 1823 in the Troy Sentinel (credited in this almanac) and this printing represents probably the earliest of 4 almanac appearances in the following year - this one being the only one of the four with a copyright notice --which was for August 27 of 1824.A copy of this almanac was offered at Christie's (NY) in 1997 with this comment:"This early printing of what has been called the most famous narrative poem by an American, was published less than one year after its original appearance in the Troy Sentinel (23 December 1823). BAL lists four almanacs from 1825 which included this poem without sequence determined. This is the only one listed with a copyright notice (dated 27 August 1824), as well as the only one which reprints the introductory paragraph from the Sentinel, suggesting it may be the next printed appearance of Moore's poem." The estimate for the almanac in this 1997 offering was $18,000 - $22,000. It did not sell.A copy of this almanac did sell at Sotheby's New York on June 1, 1995 (Stralem Collection, rebound with 7 other almanacs) for $26,000 (!); and more recently an example lacking the large folding plate sold at Bloomsbury Auction in New York in December of 2007 for $7,500.OCLC shows institutional holdings at:YaleAASAmerican Philosophical SocietyState Library of Pennsylvaniaand The Morgan Library (where it was displayed in the December, 2012 Christmas Exhibition). 81/2 x 5 1/4 inches 56 pages. Item Description: John M. Wolff, Stationer 1842 (?), 1851-65 (?), Philadelphia, 1842. Book Condition: Near Fine. Blue ink text surrounded by a red border of ornamental branches (illustrator). First edition thus. Blue ink text surrounded by a red border of ornamental branches. Broadside, measures 387 x 226mm from border to border (edge to edge probably 44x29cm); 4 folds (2 by 2) horizontal and vertical, tape reinforced on verso excellent condition, archivally framed under museum glass. Carl W. Dreppard, antiquarian, and author of the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN ANTIQUES, found "some seventy copies" of this broadsheet in an attic. He sent them to his friends as his 1932 holiday card from Lancaster, PA. That card is here present - with a photostat review and extended history of this Dreppard's offering by Walter Klinefelter, from his MORE CHRISTMAS BOOKS (1938), with Dreppard's extended description of his discovery. Dreppard believed this dated from ca. 1842, and was the first broadside appearance of this poem; but, John Wolff was active at Philadelphia from 1851-1865, and the actual date remains uncertain [Note BAL 14346 note mentions the 1842 date]. Textually, this version gives the version of the reindeer as "Donder and Blitzen!" N.B. This may be a variant, slightly smaller version than that described by G. H. M. Lawrence, NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS, no. 10 (size varies), q.v. The copy at the Library of Congress measures 44 x 29cm. - "An American Time Capsule: Three Centuries of Broadsides and Other Printed Ephemera." Note: the collection of Nancy Marshall, the bibliographer of TTNB4C, has this broadside only in digital format]. Note: "Believed to be the first Christmas greeting produced in America - E. Willis Jones, THE SANTA CLAUS BOOK, p. 36 , where his copy of this is reproduced on p.37. You don't have to love Christmas to love this piece, but it can't hurt. RARE. Bookseller Inventory # 0005638

Item Description: Bartlett and Welford, New York, 1844. First edition. Octavo, full red morocco binding, gilt titles on to the spine. Gilt tooling to the front and rear panel, all edges gilt. Contains the first appearance of Moore's famous poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas" ("Twas the Night Before Christmas"). In near fine condition with light wear. The first appearance of the poem in book form was in an anthology, The New-York Book of Poetry published in 1834. Clement C. Moore's Poems is much rarer than The New-York Book of Poetry and is the desired first edition, as it contains only Moore's poems. A very sharp copy of this important work. "Moore, a professor of Hebrew, wrote the poem in 1822 as a Christmas gift for his children. A house guest copied it in the fall of 1823, and later sent her copy to the editor of the Troy Sentinel, where it was first published, anonymously, December 23, 1823 The authorship was first disclosed in the Troy Budget, December 23, 1838 Not until St. Nicholas passed through the crucible of Doctor Clement Clarke Moore's mind and imagination did the patron saint of childhood ever ride in a sleigh, or have eight tiny reindeer Nor was he dressed in furs, nor did he smoke a pipe, nor did he ever get into the homes of good little boys and girls by going down chimneys" (Grolier American 100, 52).
