Item Description: Anchor 6-Feb-03, New York. Paperback. Book Condition: VG. 2002 First Anchor Books paperback edition, 24th printing, in Very Good condition (small crease in bottom front corner & back top near spine). From Publishers Weekly: The African-born author of more than 50 books, from children's stories (The Perfect Hamburger) to scholarly works (Forensic Aspects of Sleep), turns his talents to detection in this artful, pleasing novel about Mma (aka Precious) Ramotswe, Botswana's one and only lady private detective. A series of vignettes linked to the establishment and growth of Mma Ramotswe's "No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency" serve not only to entertain but to explore conditions in Botswana in a way that is both penetrating and light thanks to Smith's deft touch. Mma Ramotswe's cases come slowly and hesitantly at first: women who suspect their husbands are cheating on them; a father worried that his daughter is sneaking off to see a boy; a missing child who may have been killed by witchdoctors to make medicine; a doctor who sometimes seems highly competent and sometimes seems to know almost nothing about medicine. The desultory pace is fine, since she has only a detective manual, the frequently cited example of Agatha Christie and her instincts to guide her. Mma Ramotswe's love of Africa, her wisdom and humor, shine through these pages as she shines her own light on the problems that vex her clients. Images of this large woman driving her tiny white van or sharing a cup of bush tea with a friend or client while working a case linger pleasantly. General audiences will welcome this little gem of a book just as much if not more than mystery readers. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.235pp. Bookseller Inventory # 0508410

Item Description: Pantheon, 2006. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. Bright copy. Includes original jacket. First edition. 2006 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author! 227 pp. "In this latest installment in the internationally best-selling, universally beloved series, there is considerable excitement at The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. A cobra has been found in Precious Ramotswe’s office. Then a nurse from a local medical clinic reveals that faulty blood–pressure readings are being recorded there. And Botswana has a new advice columnist, Aunty Emang, whose advice is rather curt for Mma Ramotswe’s taste. All this means a lot of work for our heroine and her inestimable assistant, Grace Makutsi, and they are, of course, up to the challenge. But there’s trouble brewing in Mma Makutsi’s own life. When Phuti Radiphuti misses their customary dinner date, she begins to wonder if he is having second thoughts about their engagement. And while Mma Makutsi may be able to buy that fashionably narrow (and uncomfortable) pair of blue shoes, it may not buy her the happiness that Mma Ramotswe promises her she’ll find in the simpler things—in contentment with the world and enough tea to smooth over the occasional bumps in the road.". Item Description: Abacus, 2009. Soft cover. Book Condition: As New. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is the 9th book in the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. A previous owner has stuck an address label on the flyleaf. This is an over-sized soft-cover book printed on high quality paper. It is, therefore, more costly to ship than a standard paperback. Please expect extra shipping charges; purchasers will be advised of these charges before completion of their order. The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is located in Gaborone, Botwana. Its founder and main detective is Mma Precious Ramotswe, a ¿traditionally built lady¿, who is ably assisted by Mma Grace Makutsi who insists she is not an assistant but associate detective. Both Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi work according to the principles of detection laid down by Mr. Clovis Andersen in his book The Principles of Private Detection. The novels do not involve murder and only occasionally a crime but most often are about solving non-criminal mysteries and frequently are morality tales. They provide an excellent description of Botswana and its people and the irresistable changes between the traditional Botswana founded on the wealth of cattle and the modernizing Botswana with the problems the such change brings. Each book in the series follows on from the previous book. Characters that appear regularly are Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, Mma Ramotswe¿s husband, Phuti Radephuti, the shy and awkward owner of the Double Comfort Furniture Store and Grace¿s future husband, Violet Sephotho the arch-villainess who only managed to get 50% at the typing school, but is drop-dead gorgeous and causes Grace Makutsi (she tried to grab Phuti for herself) and other women problems ¿ sometimes fairly serious ones. Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni (Mma Ramotswe always refers to him that way even to herself and her refers to her in a similar way) owns Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors and employs two apprentices, Charlie who thinks of nothing but girls and Fanwell who is shy and applies himself to learning to be a mechanic. Mma Potokwane, the matron of the orphan farm will move heaven and earth for her children, which includes (gently) bullying Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni into repairing various mechanical equipment in return for a large slice of her famous fruit cake. It has never occurred to Precious Ramotswe that there might be disadvantages to being the best-known lady detective in Botswana. But when she receives a threatening anonymous letter, she is compelled to reconsider her unconquerable belief in a kind world and good neighbours. While she ponders the identity of the letter-writer Mma Ramotswe has to solve more problems, both professional and personal. There is an adopted child¿s poignant search for her true family, and Mr J. L. B. Matekoni¿s pursuit of an expensive miracle for their own foster daughter Motholeli. These latest developments on Tlokweng Road show that there are very few troubles that cannot be solved with kindness, and very few dry seasons that do not end with welcome rain. As winter turns to spring across the red earth, acacia trees and slow green rivers of Botswana, all is not quite as it should be on Zebra Drive, home to Mma Ramotswe and her beloved husband Mr J. L. B. Matekoni. At the No.1 Ladies¿ Detective Agency there are the usual number of cases to be pursued, from persistent theft at Teenie Magama¿s printing works to the rather more serious case of three suspicious deaths at the Mochudi hospital, but there is discontent among the ranks. It is bad enough that Mr Matekoni¿s apprentice Charlie is off on another escapade and Mma Makutsi¿s impending marriage threatens her happy working relationship with Mma Ramotswe. And when ¿ in trying to prove himself a worthy husband ¿ Mr J. L. B. Matekoni himself decides to try a little detective work, disaster looms. Bookseller Inventory # 000560

The Agency is busy, but Mma Ramotswe cannot ignore the plea which is made by a woman who comes to her with a tale of particular misfortune. Unfortunately, her attempts to help are interrupted by a close encounter between her tiny white van and a bicycle, and by a spectacular disagreement between her assistant, Mma Makutsi, and one of the apprentices at the garage. Charlie has found a fancy girlfriend who drives a Mercedes-Benz. How can he be rescued from his folly? Mma Makutsi has found a dancing class, and a man who may not be able to dance very well, but who admires her greatly. And all of this happens against a background of quiet sessions of bush tea, and of a land that stretches out forever under mile upon mile of empty sky. Bookseller Inventory # 000562

Synopsis:Mma Ramotswe and Mma Makutsi are called to a safari lodge in Botswana's Okavango Delta to carry out a delicate mission on behalf of a former guest. The Okavango makes Precious appreciate once again the beauty of her homeland: it is a paradise of teeming wildlife, majestic grasslands and sparkling water. However, it is also home to rival safari operators, fearsome crocodiles and disgruntled hippopotamuses. What's more, Mma Makutsi still does not have a date for her wedding to Phuti Radiphuti and is feeling rather tetchy herself. But Precious knows that with a little patience, just as the wide river will gently make its way round any obstacle, so will everything work out for the best in the end . . .
