Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Washington, small folio, [x], 201 p., 40 text woodcuts and 34 tinted plates of fossils with explanatory leaves. ***CONTENT: This is the special-issue, large-paper edition of O.C. Marsh's first major monograph, with page dimensions of 11.25 by 14.25 inches. In this celebrated work, Marsh describes the first known toothed birds, proving the reptilian ancestry of that class. The text provides detailed, bone-by-bone descriptions of the skeletons of five species of toothed birds. These descriptions are based on about 50 different individuals of Hesperornis, and 77 of Ichthyornis, a testimonial to the care and patience with which Marsh's collectors combed the Cretaceous Niobrara chalk of western Kansas for this rare material. The text pages are printed on thick paper with extra-wide margins. The plates, including a full-size restoration of Ichthyornis and a half-size reconstruction of Hesperornis. are tinted and are also on thick, heavy paper; many plates are folding. The spectacular Hesperornis plate unfolds to 27 by 20.5 inches. Marsh's descriptions of these extinct vertebrates, revealing that the ancestors of modern birds had teeth, were an important contribution to the broadening of evolutionary understanding. ***CONDITION: This fully complete volume is VG overall, but is internally Fine. It is bound in the original thick, plain-paper covers, with a later applied blue cloth backstrip. The covers are mildly chipped and edgeworn, but nonetheless are very sound. The sewing and binding is very firm. The text pages are immaculate: fresh, clean and bright, as are the plates. Page and plate edges untrimmed, as issued. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a very nice copy of the limited-issue printing of Marsh's important ornithology treatise. BMNH 2175 (in part). Schuchert and LeVene, p. 428. Nickles 711. International shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.
