Original morocco. Condition: Very Good. First edition. A MASTERPIECE OF BOOK DESIGN: T.E. LAWRENCE'S TRANSLATION OF THE ODYSSEY, DESIGNED BY BRUCE ROGERS. LIMITED EDITION, ONE OF ONLY 530 COPIES. IN MAGNIFICENT CUSTOM BOX BY ZAEHNSDORF WITH BEAUTIFUL 1928 PHOTOGRAPH OF LAWRENCE IN THE RAF. Contracted by Bruce Rogers in 1928 to create a prose translation of The Odyssey, Lawrence struggled with the text for four years while still working for the RAF. The result, however, was worth the wait, for ultimately the completed book was a huge success and is now recognized as one of the most elegantly printed books of the century. "The limited edition Odyssey, issued in November 1932, is one of Rogers's most beautiful books. The pages have a clean, classical appearance and each chapter opens with Greek vase figures printed on a thick gold and black roundel. Joseph Blumenthal, who was responsible for the 1972 Pierpont Morgan Library exhibition 'Art of the Printed Book: 1455-1955,' states: 'During the several years spent in selecting the 112 books finally shown, I handled every title reputed. to be among the finest volumes made. since Gutenberg. I believe that the Bruce Rogers Odyssey is indisputably among the most beautiful books ever produced.'" (Orlans). This copy is bound in the original black morocco by W.H. Smith and Son and housed in a spectacular full heavily-gilt morocco folding silk-lined case by the legendary bindery Zaehnsdorf. The inside of the case houses a wonderful photograph of Lawrence from 1928 taken by Flight Lieutenant Smetham on the aerodrome at Miranshah Fort in Waziristan, British India during his service in the Royal Air Force. (The photograph has not been examined outside its casing in the box but appears to be vintage.) With elegant leather bookplate with the initials "GNR" above the photo. This GNR bookplate is found in many fine books and is possibly the bookplate for the collection of the Great Northern Railroad. Homer. The Odyssey. English translation by T. E. Lawrence. Designed and printed by Bruce Rogers. London: Sir Emery Walker, Wilfred Merton and Bruce Rogers, 1932. Limited edition, one of 530 copies. Tall quarto (290x200 mm), original black morocco by W. H. Smith & Son, gilt-lettered spine. Without original slipcase (but now housed in Zaehnsdorf box). Printed in Rogers's Centaur type on light grey Barcham Green paper. Gold leaf roundels on title-page and on 25 headpieces. Just a few superficial scuffs to binding. A spectacular copy. First Edition
First edition of the Foulis Homer; the typographic masterpiece of the Foulis Press, and one of the finest editions of Homer. Folio, 4 volumes bound in full tree calf, rebacked with gilt titles and Greek key ruling to the spine, morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, Greek key ruling to the front and rear panels, text in Greek. Vols. I and II lacking the half-titles as usual. Provenance: John Hope (1868-1936) with his stamp to the title pages. Ownership signatures of Henry Schwab. In very good condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. An excellent example of this typographic gem. "The partnership of the Foulis brothers marked the most significant period for Glasgow in publishing and printing during the eighteenth century. They printed some 586 editions together during their active partnership, 1744â "75, producing books at a rate which varied from nine in 1764 to forty-three in 1751, an average of almost seventeen a year. Of greatest significance, however, were the four volumes of the works of Homer issued in 1756â "8 in folio. The Homer was financed by an informal group of professors at Glasgow led by William Rouat. The texts were printed in a new fount of Greek type designed and cut by the Glasgow typefounder Alexander Wilson." (DNB). "'One of the most splendid editions of Homer ever delivered to the world' says Harwood, 'and I am informed that its accuracy is equal to its magnificence.' The reader, on perusing the preface, will see with what pains this sumptuous work was executed; each sheet, before it was finally committed to the press, was six times corrected by various literary men" (Dibdin). Accurate and typographically splendid, the edition was edited by Professors Moor and Muirhead, and was awarded the Silver Medals of the Select Society of Edinburgh in 1756 and 1757.

Presentation copy signed by William Morris on the edge of the half-title, inscribed "to Eirkr Magnusson, with William Morris' best wishes." Magnusson was an Icelandic scholar and University of Cambridge librarian, who also had been Morris' teacher, and would be his friend and co-translator of a number of Scandanavian epics from 1869 to the close of the 19th century. A very nice association between the dynamo of the British Arts and Crafts movement and his mentor/muse in the art of translation.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. tes tou Homerou Ilias & Odyssea [Homer's Iliad, Odyssey, and Homeric Hymns. Edited by J. Moor and G. Muirhead] (Glasgow, Robert and Andrew Foulis, 1756-8). Four folio volumes (335 x 210 mm) bound as two (as often). xi, [1], 312; [4], 333, [3]. Printed entirely in Greek aside from dedication. Late 18th century tan calf boards, rebacked to style in the 19th century. Spine with gilt ruled raised bands in six compartments, lettered direct in gilt in second and fourth compartments and at foot of spine; remaining compartments with large gilt-stamped medallions. Boards gilt ruled and blind tooled. Boards scuffed and chipped. Lacks the general title issued in 1758 (as often). Half titles for Iliad and Odyssey present but mis-bound, i.e. the half title for vol. 2 (comprising Iliad 13 24) is bound before Iliad 1 12, etc. A milestone in typography and printing, and one of the most famous editions of Homer ever published. Professors James Moor and George Muirhead, from the University of Glasgow, proof-read the sheets multiple times, and the proofs were made available for public inspection at the University with a cash reward for anyone spotting a typo (purportedly never claimed) Thomas Jefferson, in a letter dated April 1, 1818, praises the perfection of the Foulis edition of Homer above all others. The text is printed on fine laid paper (with the pro patria watermark) using a new Greek font designed by Alexander Wilson. The beauty and simplicity of the typography and layout (in the 17th and 18th centuries variorum editions, with text, translation, scholia, and notes all crammed onto the same page were increasingly the norm) mark the edition as one of the high points of 18th century publishing. Gaskell 319.
