Book Description: Hard cover. 973 finely engraved & handcolored plates with 14 of the orig. watercolors. Each plate within a triple ruled frame, handcolored in yellow. Text within decorative borders. Ten vols. Large folio (465 x 320 mm.), fine French polished calf (ca. 1820-30) by Messier, sides finely panelled in gilt & blind in the Romantic style, spines divided into seven compartments with gilt tooling or lettering, a.e.g. Paris: Imprimerie Royale [Vols. I-VI]; Suivant la Copie de l’Imprimerie Royale [VII-X], 1771-72-74-77-78-83-83-83-84-86. A magnificent large-paper set, finely bound, of "one of the early and important landmarks in the history of ornithology" (Zimmer), richly illustrated with 973 engraved plates, all very finely handcolored, and with the addition of fourteen of the original watercolors by François Nicolas Martinet, the artist for the entire work. This set, in very fine condition, is the "most ambitious and comprehensive bird book [and] ranks still as one of the most important of all bird books from the collector’s point of view."–Fine Bird Books, p. 63. In 1765, at Buffon’s direction, Martinet began the enormous project of drawing, painting, and engraving the plates. In the course of production over eighty artists and assistants were engaged, ultimately producing 973 ornithological plates. An additional 35 plates depicting animals, reptiles, insects, and corals were produced at the same time, but they are not mentioned in the body of the text; it is common to find most sets without them (as in the present set). This work was issued in four formats: the large and ordinary paper folio sets were issued with handcolored plates by and after François Martinet. Quarto and 12mo issues were also produced, illustrated with a series of black-and-white plates drawn by de Sève. As mentioned above, this set has been enriched with fourteen of the original watercolors by Martinet bound-in. They are: 1. Hirondelle de Mer, de Cayenne (Vol. IX, 988), unsigned but by Martinet 2. Oye, des terres Magellaniques (Vol. IX, 1006), unsigned but by Martinet 3. Canard musqué (Vol. X, 989), signed "Martinet" 4. Canard, de Miclon (Vol. X, 1008), signed "Martinet" 5. Millouinars (Vol. X, 1002), signed "Martinet" 6. Le Morillon (Vol. X, 1001), signed "Martinet" 7. Canard du Nord (Vol. X, 995), signed "Martinet" 8. Canard Brun (Vol. X, 1007), signed "Martinet" 9. Sarcelle d’Égypte (Vol. X, 1000), signed "Martinet" 10. Sarcelle, de l’isle de Férroë (Vol. X, 999), signed "Martinet" 11. Le Pétrel, ou l’oiseau-Tempête (Vol. X, 993), the engraved plate has been signed by Martinet but the drawing is definitely by him. 12. Le Pingoin (Vol. X, 1003), signed "Martinet" 13. Femelle du Pingouin (Vol. X, 1004), signed "Martinet" 14. Mancho des Hottentots (Vol. X, 1005), again the engraved plate has been signed by Martinet but the drawing is by him. This pagination of this copy collates according to Zimmer with the directions to the binder and errata at the end of each volume. In some copies the first volume is dated 1770. A fine set. Several upper joints with some barely noticeable and minor repairs. ? Anker 76–"one of the chief works of ornithological literature." Nissen 158. Zimmer, pp. 104-06. Book Description: Paris: De l'Imprimerie royale, 1770-1786., 1786. 10 volumes, folio (18 1/2 x 13 1/4 in.; 464 x 343 mm). 973 fine hand-colored plates drawn and engraved by François Nicolaus Martinet under the supervision of Edme Daubenton, text within decorative borders. Contemporary half red straight-grained morocco (extremities scuffed, bookplates removed from the front paste-downs). Provenance: George M. Pflaumer. "Ranks still as one of the most important of all bird books from the collector's point of view" (Fine Bird Books). First edition, large paper issue, bound as often found without the 35 extra plates of animals, insects, and reptiles designed to illustrate ornithological volumes of Buffon's monumental "Histoire naturelle generale" (1749-1804). Buffon was appointed keeper of the "Jardin du Roi", later the "Jardin des Plantes", and the collection connected with it, the "Cabinet du Roi" in 1739. He augmented the collection of birds exponentially, increasing it to more than 800 species gathered from all four corners of the globe. In 1765 at Buffon's direction, Martinet began drawing and painting the collection, and engraved the plates under the supervision of Edme Daubenton. In1770 the first volume devoted to birds was published: "Its popularity was primarily assured by Buffon's great literary ability which allowed him to present even the most difficult topics in such sparkling style, in such a universally understandable form, and so fascinating a manner that, as was said, even ladies found amusement in reading about them.the special merit of the work is principally due to the fact that. it was the first to create interest in Nature and natural history in wide circles" (Anker). Buffon's "Oiseaux." was ultimately issued in four formats: the large and ordinary paper folio sets were issued with hand-colored plates by and after Francois Martinet. Quarto and twelve-mo issues were also produced, illustrated with a series of black and white plates drawn by de Seve. Anker 76; "Fine Bird Books" 83; McGill/Wood 267; Nissen IVB 158; Zimmer 104-106. Book Description: Anker 74; Bertin (and others), Buffon (Paris, 1952), especially pp. 234-235; DSB II, pp. 576-581; Landwehr, Coloured plates 45 (Amsterdam/Dordrecht edition); Nissen, IVB 160; Nissen, ZBI 672, 678; PMM 198; Zimmer, pp. 104-109 (various editions). The ornithological section of Buffon's famous Histoire naturelle, with the first 8 volumes in the first edition and the 9th volume in the new edition published in Amsterdam and Dordrecht, the only quarto edition to rival the original French Imprimerie Royale edition.''A great number of species are enumerated and described in this work, which is one of the chief works of ornithological literature'' (Anker). The birds are dealt with under their vernacular names. ''The collaborator for the first six volumes of the text was Ph. Guéneau de Montbeillard, who also wrote the section "Hirondelles" in vol. VII. The Abbé G.L.C.A. Bexon then assisted with the remainder of the bird section, so that Montbeillard could devote himself entirely to the insects'' (Anker).Georges Louis Leclerc (1707-1788) -- in 1717 his father became Comte de Buffon and Louis XV later made Georges Comte de Buffon -- was an inconspicuous student who only showed a special talent for mathematics. Initially he combined a career in finance with one in science, translating important works by Hales and Newton into French. In 1739 Buffon became director of the Jardin du Roi, later the Jardin des Plantes, and the Histoire naturelle may have originated as a description of the royal collection. It appeared from 1749 to 1804 and eventually comprised 44 volumes. Buffon was assisted among others by the anatomist Louis Daubenton, and the final volumes were completed after his death under the direction of Comte de Lacépède.The last volume lacks the last leaf (the ''Avis au relieur'' giving a list of the plates). The bindings show some scratches and minor wear but are structurally sound. One of the most important early landmarks in the history of ornithology. Bookseller Inventory # F8JGC9V03MLM
