Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Full Morocco, 7 inches tall. A beautiful 'Kelliegram' binding by the great English firm of Kelly & Sons in a style they introduced that has since been much imitated. Illustrated by Randolph Caldecott throughout. Original cloth covers bound in. With the gilt stamps of Kelly & Sons and that of Brentano's New York (booksellers). Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1876. A hand-signed fragment - seemingly the final line of a letter - has been inserted by a previous owner ahead of the title page. The signature is clear and well-presented, reading "Yours many truly, Washington Irving". The book itself is largely well-presented, internally clean throughout but for some very occasional spots of foxing, though none of any significant size or causing any major discolouration. Gilt page edges are a little dulled from prior handling, but free from any major creases or signs of wear. Binding is original, with the front board internally detached from the inside edge but still secure at the rear, with some bumps and rubbing at the very outer corners of the covers, and outer cloth at rear of spine beginning to fray, but carefully repaired to a good, presentable standard. Illustrative plate at pp. 54-55 is present but pulled loose from the binding, others also only loosely attached throughout. Gilt titles and patterning are again a little dulled from prior handling and use, but remain generally very attractive. Our bookbinder has quoted repairs for the above (front hinge + loose plates) at £80, which we can initiate at your option. Why on Amazon do most sellers not describe their actual book? First editions illustrated by Caldecott, either first or second printings; the Macmillan bibliography lists two printings for Old Christmas dated 1876 and two for Bracebridge Hall dated 1877, both indistinguishable. It also the first separate edition of Old Christmas, which was originally published as part of Irving's Sketch Book in 1819. This attractive set is an early example of the illustrated gift book market. Caldecott, for whom the medal is named, found his first professional success with these illustrations. On the front pastedown of Bracebridge Hall is a bookplate by Charles William Sherborn, known as "The Little Master", "the greatest Victorian copper-engraver of bookplates, and inspirer of the revival of armorial bookplate design" (Lee, p. 100). It is dated 1890 and was produced for R. E. Brandt, who collected book engravings. Brian North Lee, British Bookplates: A Pictorial History, 1979. Two volumes, octavo. Original publisher's green cloth, spines and front covers lettered and decorated in gilt, brown endpapers, edges gilt. Frontispieces with tissue guard, illustrated title pages printed in grey and green, illustrations to text, engraved by J. D. Cooper after Randolph Caldecott. First Edition
The First Caldicott Edition. Beautifully illustrated with dozens of engraved images by Randolph Caldecott either on plates or within the text arranged and engraved by J. D. Cooper. Tall 8vo, handsomely bound in the publisher's original polished navy- blue cloth, the upper cover with double gilt fillet rules at the borders, lower cover with the rules in blind, the spine lettered in gilt. xiv, 165 pp. A very handsome, beautifully preserved copy, bright and clean and attractive, the text-block and illustrations all in fine condition. A VERY HANDSOME PRODUCTION OF IRVINGâ S HOLIDAY MEMORIES ILLUSTRATED BY ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED ILLUSTRATORâ S OF HIS DAY. Randolph Caldecott was acknowledged as a major influence and inspiration by many of the 20th centuries greats, such as Potter, Shepard and Greenaway. His reputation is such that the American Library Associations annual award for outstanding childrenâ s book illustrations is named The Caldecott in his honor. Washington Irving wrote this tale, and the other stories in THE SKETCH BOOK under the pseudonym of Geoffrey Grayon. Narrated in the first person, it was a series of stories that relate to the authorâ s travels in England. It was also his most successful work. This tale is replete with old English holiday traditions, many of which were already fading into memory during the time of Irvingâ s visit. In the authorâ s opening words, â There is nothing in England that exercises a more delightful spell over my imagination than the lingerings of the holiday customs and rural games of former times.â Irving does a fine job of describing these joyous occasions, and thus helped to preserve them for the generations to come.
