Item Description: The Viking Press, New York, 1957. First Edition. Kerouac, Jack. ON THE ROAD. Signed. New York: Viking Press, 1957. 8vo., 310pp. A very good or better copy, the white spine lettering partially rubbed, evidence of a bookplate having been removed from the front free endpaper otherwise the book block is clean & free of blemish. Kerouac has signed in black ink at the top of the second blank page which has likely been added later to this copy. Notwithstanding it is indeed signed & as such not to be toyed with as there are only a handful of really top-of-mind modern titles & right beside Catcher & Mockingbird sits OTR or is it the other way round? The dustwrapper is very good or better having been professionally restored with work done primarily at the spine heel & crown. An extremely good copy. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 30936

Item Description: New York: Viking (1957), 1957. First Edition. Octavo. The seminal novel, travelogue, blueprint, and treatise of the Beat movement in American literature; not to mention the defining book of its era. The tiniest of spots to the front board, else a sharp, fine copy with vibrant top stain, in as close to a fine jacket as I have seen, itself with a tiny corresponding spot at the verso, a hint of wear to the spine head and front flap fold, and a few tiny handling creases. There might be a nicer copy out there, but I haven't seen it. Bookseller Inventory # 20392

Item Description: The Viking Press, New York, 1957. Hardcover. First Edition. The longtime reigning champ of Beat Literature, finally made into a film, disappointing as it was. A significantly above-average copy of a significant book that still resonates with many of its readers nearly sixty years after its initial publication. The book is like new with a small ticket from a California bookstore on the lower front pastedown, a habit of new bookstores that more or less died in the 1960s. The first issue dustwrapper is complete with a hardly noticeable closed half-inch tear to the top of the front and a slightly longer and jagged closed tear to the bottom rear which has mild soiling. Only mild sunning to the spine which has very light wear to the tips but no chipping. Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper. Bookseller Inventory # 012977

Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1957. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine with the topstain bright red. The dust jacket is near fine: unfaded but with some light rubbing. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp copy of this Beat classic. The raucous, exuberant, often wildly funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation on its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat.'" Written in the mode of ecstatic improvisation that Allen Ginsberg described as "spontaneous bop prosody," Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. In his portrayal of the fervent relationship between the writer Sal Paradise and his outrageous, exasperating, and inimitable friend Dean Moriarty, Kerouac created one of the great friendships in American literature; and his rendering of the cities and highways and wildernesses that his characters restlessly explore are a hallucinatory travelogue of a nation he both mourns and celebrates. "On the Road has become a classic of the Beat Movement with its stream-of-consciousness depiction of the rejection of mainstream American values set in a physical and metaphysical journey across America" (Book in America, 136). Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1957. First edition. 310pp. Octavo [21 cm.] Black cloth with white stamped titles on front board and backstrip. Near fine/Near fine. Gentle rubbing to the corners of the jacket. Blind owner embossment on the front free endsheet. Name in ink (same as embossment) on the front pastedown near gutter. Kerouac's 'On the Road' is one of the most influential and important novels of the Postwar era, and along with Ginsberg's 'Howl' and Burroughs' 'Naked Lunch' form the Beat holy trinity.A nice clean copy of this important work. Charters A2a."I wrote that for my new [second] wife, to tell her what I'd been through. It's directed toward a woman. That's why women like it. It's sexy because it's addressed to a woman. But if I was writing for my mother, I'd leave many things out. 'Course I had to think of Malcolm Cowley too, the Protestant Establishment. He was literary advisor of Viking. Giroux said, 'My God, Jack, it's like Dostoevskii." Harcourt, Brace editor-in-chief Robert Giroux had it first but said sales manager Ed Hodge "does not approve of the book." I said all right, I'll take it to Viking, and they sat on it for seven years. But I wrote it thinking of those guys. It's not too dirty. And I wanted to give a concise poetic opinion of Neal [Cassidy]. They used to put guys in the nut house for that in the days of Christopher Smart. It changed the whole country." - Jack Kerouac. Item Description: Viking, NY, 1957. Octavo. (iv) 310pp. First edition. Author's second book, which stands quite firmly as the quintessential work of beat literature. The subject of Kerouac's rhapsodic novel is well-known, as are the stories surrounding its composition, and the mixed bag of critical response to its publication. What is less often cited is Kerouac's intended audience, which Ann Charters reveals in her bibliography: in a later interview, he admits that the book was written for his second wife "to tell her what I'd been through. It's directed toward a woman . it's sexy because it's addressed to a woman." Fine and bright in black cloth stamped in white, and with unrestored dust wrapper which shows a few tiny nicks and a couple of small closed tears at extremities. (Charters A2.a). In a clean, crisp first issue dustjacket with the blue and red bands at the top and bottom of the rear panel. With "On the Road" "$3.95" at the top of the front inside flap. With Bill English's abstract rectangular drawings in blue, red, and black on the front panel and the spine. There are small chips at the top and bottom of the spine ends and black ink marks at the top and bottom of the rear inside flap and at the bottom of the front flap. Apparently, the dustjacket was wrapped in a Brodart protector which left some sticky residue at the bottom and top edges of the boards as well as some black residue to the edges of the endpapers. Perhaps a lending library book, noting the faint tape marks at the edges of the front and rear boards. With red topstaining which has a touch of fading here and there. Overall, a handsome, collectible copy of this scarce "Beat" classic. First Edition. With title page date of 1957 and "Published in 1957 by the Viking Press, Inc. 625 Madison Avenue, New York 22" on the copyright page. With Copyright of 1955, 1957 by Jack Kerouac. Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1957. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's cloth, black dust jacket. A very good copy, with light wear to the spine ends and the front board, minor rubbing to the edges and corners, a light crease to the spine, otherwise a very clean and fresh copy; in a first issue unclipped dust jacket, with light wear to the hinges, minor chipping to the extremities, slight scuffing to rear panel, and very light rubbing to the front panel. Overall, an attractive copy without significant wear, which is most endemic to this title. On the Road is Kerouac's second novel and certainly his most renowned. Before its release in 1957, sections of On the Road were published as articles in a variety of literary magazines and were received well by audiences, prompting the publishers to describe the first complete edition as "a publishing event of no small interest." Today, On the Road is best known as the novel that made Jack Kerouac famous and it remains popular with younger generations. In this work, Kerouac describes his years traveling the United States and Mexico with his friend Neal Cassady in their youthful search for adventure, excitement, and knowledge of self in stream-of-consciousness prose that is as captivating as the story itself. Kerouac wrote the bulk of this novel in three weeks on a singular 120-foot-long scroll and spent years editing and revising it before its publication in 1957. Bookseller Inventory # JK034
