Said's groundbreaking polemic lambasting the ossified Western view of the East as sensual, lazy, tyrannical, corrupt and retrograde. Among his fresh insights was that Forster, Conrad and Kipling produced novels designed not to question status quo, but to bolster colonialism, to keep the empire intact. The dust jacket features the painting "The Snake Charmer" by Jean-Leon Gerome. While the condition factors are evident, this copy presents well, with the dust jacket now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve. .

Book First Edition
Dark Blue Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1978. First Edition. xiii, 369pp. Edward Wadie Said (1935-2003) was a Palestinian American academic, literary critic and political activist. Educated in the Western canon at British and American schools, Said applied his education and bi-cultural perspective to illuminating the gaps of cultural and political understanding between the Western world and the Eastern world, especially about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the Middle East. In this book he establishes the term "Orientalism" as a critical concept to describe the West's commonly contemptuous depiction and portrayal of The East, i.e. the Orient. Societies and peoples of the Orient are those who inhabit the places of Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Said argues that Orientalism, in the sense of the Western scholarship about the Eastern World, is inextricably tied to the imperialist societies who produced it, which makes much Orientalist work inherently political and servile to power. The book is bound in the original dark blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends and fading along about 1/8" to 1/4" of the top edge of the boards and spine. There is some wear to the titling on the spine and front board. The contents are tight and clean with a small water stain on the fore edge of the rear fixed endpaper. There is no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light bumping to the spine ends and top corners and a nick on the top front corner. The reverse of the wrapper shows some yellowing along the top and bottom edges.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. New York: Pantheon, (1978). Octavo, original navy cloth, original unclipped dust jacket in near fine condition. Orientalism, a founding work in post-colonial theory, "remains the most influential and most controversial" in the field (Cass, 25). It offered a major new perspective on the West's representation of non-Western cultures: a webbing of thought and action described by Said as a "system of ideological fictions." A leading Columbia University professor, Said was also controversial as "a fierce critic of American and Israeli policies and an equally fierce proponent of the Palestinian cause" (New York Times). "First Edition" stated on copyright page.
