First Edition Signed
First American Edition. First American edition. Signed by Edward Said on front free endpaper. xv, [1], 295, [5] pp. Original cloth and paper covered boards. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket, slightly sunned. A signed memoir by the Palestinian-American scholar and activist (best-known for his book Orientalism) who founded the academic field of postcolonial studies.
First edition. Inscribed by Edward Said to Dr Nagla Attia, "To Nagla with regards Edward Said". Nagla Attia wrote an academic paper on T E Lawrence at Lancaster University. Also loosely inserted a programme for an event at Westminster Central Hall on April 20th 2001 when Edward Said was interviewed by Karl Sabbagh. "Perceptions and Misconceptions of the Peace Process in the Middle East". Also loosely inserted an 8 page printed copy of a review of the book by Egyptian novelist and political and cultural commentator Ahdaf Soueif, dated in ink "24th January 2000". "Like Said, Soueif was educated in both Egypt and Britain, and in the "Preface" to Mezzaterra (2004), she says that she is "a bit of this and a bit of that". The two writers are similar in that they come from relatively privileged, educated classes in their respective communities. They also knew each other: Said was something of a mentor to Soueif, reviewing In the Eye of the Sun favorably, while Soueif has stated her admiration for Said's work on a number of occasions" [Kennedy, V., (2022) "Mixing Genres to Overcome the East/West Divide: Lifewriting in Ahdaf Soueif's The Map of Love and Edward Said's After the Last Sky and Out of Place"] 8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A near fine copy.
