Item Description: Soft Cover. Book Condition: Fair. Originally issued in stiff maroon paper wraps, this nicely illustrated book was rebound in leather, with marble end-papers. The book itself is in fair to good condition, but the leather wraps are quite beat up, with the leather nearly detached from the spine. The cover title in gilt is quite striking. The 72 glossy pages all have photographs colored in the manner of the day, showing cities, trains, and sights from Omaha to San Francisco. A nice map of the route spreads over two split pages near the front. It's a cool book. Size: 8" x 10 1/2". Bookseller Inventory # 15360 History

Item Description: Union Pacific and Southern Pacific Railroads, Omaha, NB, U.S.A., 1908. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket as Issued. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. Subtitled: "Over the wagon trail of the hardy Pioneers runs the Overland Route as pictured in these pages; over vast plains, once prairie, now farmland; past the high outpost of the Rockies; across the surface of that strange inland sea, Great Salt Lake; over the crest of the high Sierra; through picturesque canyon and valley to the Golden Gate." The publication features colorized photographs of trip highlights and U.S. history on nearly every glossy page (72 pages in all) and is obviously a high quality promotional brochure for the era. The front cover depicts an Indian chief on a horse on a high bluff in the foreground. He is looking at pioneer wagon trains crossing the plains below. The rear cover features "The Overland Limited" crossing the Great Salt Lake Cut-off. Both cover illustrations feature color over a chocolate brown paper. A two-page color map of the overall rail lines with photo inserts is located at the publication's frontispiece. This is a great piece of railroad history, stemming from the era when the Union Pacific was gaining control over its former Southern Pacific rival and completing a quest that began with the driving of the golden spike at Promontory Summit, Utah in 1869. The transcontinental line opened the U.S. to theretofore unimaginable ease in travel and industry. This copy has a nearly detached front cover and the rear cover's flap is detached, but laid in. The cover has chips and minor paper losses at the edges. The publication is intact and in very good condition internally, with just a bit of damp stain remnant at the rear bottom margin on the last several pages. It has no marks from the previous owner and has been well cared for (no folds, creases, soils, wrinkles, etc). It is a great historical reference and resource from an era when the rails were the primary movers of people, products, and resources over long distances. The format is 11 inches high x 8 inches wide. Very scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 002689
