Item Description: George Doran, New York, 1925. Cloth. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Doran, 1925. First edition. Precedes the London Heinneman 1st. Original maroon cloth titled in gilt to the spine and in blind to the upper cover. A good plus copy, not faded, some wear to edges, with replacement of old endsheets renewed, internally very good. The copyright 1925 with the Device of Doran under the copyright which indicates 1st edition, 1st issue. Maugham lived in China from 1920, Maugham's inspiration for the character of Kitty Fane, and thus the central plot, came from the account of Pia of Siena from Dante's Purgatorio, first read when he was twenty. On a trip to China in 1920, Maugham found the suitable modern setting for his story. Note, this famous novel became the basis of four fine films, one silent, one in 1934 starring Greta Garbo as Kitty Fane, a color English version with a changed title in 1958, and finally a proper remake in 2006 photographed in China by Edward Norton and Naomi Watts, who starr along with co stars Toby James and Liev Schreiber.
