Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Final Draft script for the 1981 film. Written for the screen by Dennis Potter, based on his screenplay for the 1978 BBC television series. One of Steve Martin's earliest and most bizarre critical successes, and along with "The Singing Detective" the work for which the late Dennis Potter is best remembered. Potter's trademark dark sensibilities permeate the film's mood, punctuated by wildly complex, choreographed musical numbers. Nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay. Set in Chicago during the Depression, shot on location in California, Iowa, and Illinois. Orange titled wrappers, noted as FINAL DRAFT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 50, dated August 18, 1980, with credits for screenwriter Potter, director/producer Ross, and producer Nora Kaye. Title page present, dated 8/18/80, noted as FINAL DRAFT, with credit for screenwriter Potter. 141 leaves, with last page of text numbered 138. Mimeograph duplication. Pages and wrapper Very Good, bound with two gold brads.
Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Revised Final Draft SCRIPT. Dated: Otober 22, 1980. Number 236 is inked-stamped at upper righthand corner of the front cover. Near fine in printed bradbound goldenrod-colored covers. (Light shelfwear with traces of faint foxing on front cover) Features white mechanically reproduced sheets, with numerous blue revision pages. There are also 21 pages of storyboard drawings held together by a paperclip which are laid-in. This quirky musical melodrama was directed by Herbert Ross, starring Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters & Christopher Walken. It represents writer Dennis Potter's first critical success in the medium of screenwriting. (0).
