Binding somewhat rubbed with some wear to backstrip bands, rear hinges weak, considerable wear to endpapers in both volumes (removal of library plates?). With 2 pp. letter, 8vo, 8 x 5 inches, written in ink on letterhead, in fine condition. PublisherÕs de luxe edition of GrantÕs Memoirs into which is laid a brief but interesting letter to Oliver Hoyt, a long-time supporter of the President: ÒYour favor. arrived two days ago. I am indebted to the Vice-President for any knowledge as to whom I was indebted for this kind remembrance.Ó signed U.S. Grant. Oliver Corse Hoyt (July 24, 1823ÐMay 5, 1887) was a member of the Connecticut Senate from 1877 to 1881. He was President Pro Tempore of the Connecticut Senate from 1877 to 1879. He was a presidential elector in 1872, and cast his vote for Ulysses S. Grant. Hoyt was a trustee of a fund of $250,000 that was raised by private subscription in 1881 for the benefit of Grant and his family, to insure the General an income for the remainder of his life.
