Lausanne: Albert Skira Editeur, 1931, first Picasso edition of the first major book ill'd by Picasso (and Skira's first project), number 114 of 145 impressions printed entirely on Arches a la main (handmade) paper, signed by Pablo Picasso in pencil on the justification page. The complete book with the classic text by Ovid in French and 30 original etchings by Picasso, printed in black, 15 of them hors-texte. This exemplar comes with an extra suite of 30 original hors-texte etchings with remarques, from the canceled plates. The suite is number V of 10 exemplars on Chine paper. Plate size 12.5 x 8.8 in (31 x 22 cm); 394 pages, both the complete book and the extra suite very well and elegantly bound in full black morocco, fit in a matching slipcase; the original wrappers preserved; overall size 13.5 x 11 x 3 in (34 x 27 x 7 cm). An exceptional copy with an unbelievable state of preservation; the etchings and pages are clean, crisp and bright, void of foxing; the only minor exception is two pages have a small faint stain on one of the edges; also, the slipcase with a couple of minor stain spots. References: Goeppert-Cramer 19; Bloch 99-128; Rauch 54; "From Manet to Hockney" 91; Lejard 136; Skira 292; Stern 92; Geiser 143-191; Chapon pp.146-148; Matarasso 19; Logan Collection 56; Museum of Modern Art 162; "The Artist & The Book" 224: "The Ovid is the first of Picasso's major illustrated books and the beginning of a graphic book production that has continued unceasingly to the present. In his graphic work of the 1930's, the artist often displayed a strongly classical spirit, but his line is never static or conventional - rather subtly distorted to give a sense of freedom and movement". Castleman pp. 30, 61, 93, 111 & 242: "In this, Picasso's first serious attempt to follow a text and provide an alternate vision of it, he exploited his innate talent for organizing line into compositions. Even where he depicted the movement of horses, they appear as if in a classic frieze, and their activity does not rupture the picture plane". 0.0. Signed by Author(s). Book. There is the habitual slight rippling to edges of some leaves, as normal, overall an excellent copy. The difference in book number (III) and the litho number (15) is not a mismatch but normal; we have discussed this issue with Mr. Patrick Cramer, and there is no problem. Item Description: 1918. PICASSO ; (illustrator). Harford Connecticut/ New York: James Thrall Soby/Random House, [1934]. First edition with the cancel title with the fictitious "second edition"statement. According to 101 Books, by Roth, the publisher "attempted to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out. copies with the original title page are exceedingly rare." [vi], 104, [1, blank], [1, colophon]. pp. Extensively illustrated with 104 black and white photogravures. Studying in Israel in 1950, she met and married the painter Yehoshua Kovarsky, and began to study painting. Later in life, under the name of Kovarska, she found fulfillment as a painter with several exhibits in Los Angeles. She used both acrylics and ink. Item Description: Paris: Francois Bernouard, 1949, 1949. AN EXCEPTIONAL COPY OF THIS IMPORTANT LIVRE D'ARTISTE, WITH PENCIL-SIGNED ETCHINGS BY MAURICE UTRILLO AND HIS WIFE, LUCIE VALORE. This book is a collection of poems about Montmartre by Vertex (there is even a poem dedicated to Utrillo and Valore!), illustrated with reproductions of drawings by many artists associated with Montmartre, including Marie Laurencin, Dunoyer de Segonzac, Dignimont, Laprade, Charles Guerin, and Roger Wild. Also illustrated with THREE LOOSE HORS-TEXTE ORIGINAL ETCHINGS, one each by Utrillo, Valore, and Bernard Lamotte (this copy lacks the etching by Picasso). All three etchings are signed in the plate. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY printed for Robert Conchon. On the verso of the title-page is a fine watercolor by Vertex, with a signed presentation inscription to Conchon. Furthermore, THE ETCHINGS BY UTRILLO AND VALORE ARE SIGNED IN PENCIL BY THE ARTISTS. Maurice Utrillo (1883-1955), among the greatest of modern artists, married his fellow artist (and former patron) Lucie Valore (1878-1967) in 1935, after she had been widowed. Utrillo made very few original prints, and signed impressions are of the utmost rarity. From a total edition of 110 numbered copies, this is ONE OF ONLY 15 BEAUTIFULLY PRINTED ON FINE MARAIS WOVE PAPER. From the private collection of Sylvan Cole (1918-2005), the leading American print dealer. Large folio. Loose as issued in wraps. UNCUT AND UNOPENED. A few creases to extreme margin of half-title, else FINE AND BRIGHT. In the original (lightly worn) board chemise and slipcase. Utrillo was surely Montmartre's most emblematic artist, and the signed etchings by him and his wife make this a truly wonderful book. Since these etchings are loose (as issued), they are ready for framing. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. Bookseller Inventory # 3040
