Title, Cont: "Containing the Authorized and Revised Versions of the Old and New Testaments Arranged in Parallel Columns, giving the correct pronunciation of every proper name contained in the Bible. Complete Concordance. Marginal References, Chronological tables; a History of ancient Biblical manuscripts. with fac-similes of the same; the earliest printed editions of the Bible; a history of the revision of the Bible, etc." Nd; ca. 1900. Large, heavy book is covered in pebble-textured black leather, blindstamped on front with leaves and decorative gilt capital letters.Spine has four raised bands, gilt title. Back cover is stamped all over in a geometric pattern. Edges moderately worn. Front hinge is precarious, held by tape reinforcing the eps. AEG. Textured black eps. There is a presentation page in pastel colors (unmarked); a full-color frontis of Moses with the Ten Commandments; an elaborate full-color pictorial title page; and following that, a complete t.p. printed in red and black. Verso of this t.p. is a list of Judges' Reports from the U.S. Centennial Commission, with the latest date 1900. Next are notes from translators and revisors. Contents are given in a list of highlights of each book; then color maps (2); articles on animals in the Bible by James Boyd, lavishly illustrated; birds, botany, and serpents; insects (here is the only observed closed tear in one page); and another article by Boyd "Patriarchs, Priests, Prophets, and Kings, or, Striking Characters, Scenes and Events of Old Testament History." Next is a "comprehensive & illustrated history" by Rev. Alfred Nevin; followed by biographical sketches of translators and reformers, and then history and creeds of religious denominations. More small sections on history or explanation follow, each with ills. and occasionally full-color, full-page ills. Finally there is a self-pronouncing dictionary compiled from the editions of William Smith. This is copyrighted 1898 by A.J. Holman & Co. After the Old Testament, a variety of elaborate color pages include marriage records, births, deaths, a family temperance pledge (none of these pps written on); the 15 pp. of history of the apostles, a list of Jesus' parables, and several pps. of ills. Before the N.T. text is "The Hofmann Gallery of New Testament Illustrations" (30 pp) and more preliminary information. Inserted into the gospel of John is "The Thorvaldsen Gallery" of sculpture, also copyrighted by Holman. After some final explanations and a concordance, the tome ends with the Psalms of David in Metre. The entire book is clean and tight, with lavish color and much, much supplemental material.
