First Edition Signed
First edition in English of Pierre Boulleâ s chilling novel that launched one of the greatest science fiction sagas in motion picture history. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, lengthily inscribed, "a Chris Aragama en lui souhaitant beaucoup de succes, avec l'amicale sympathie de Pierre Boulle." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell slipcase. Translated from the French by Xan Fielding. Most rare and desirable signed and inscribed. Pierre Boulleâ s tale of astronauts trapped on a planet ruled by apes offers â a parable of racial and other social failings on Earth, in the grand satiric tradition of Gulliverâ s Travelsâ (Anatomy of Wonder II:143). Boulle's novel inspired a media franchise comprising eight films, two television series, and several comic books. The first film was Planet of the Apes (1968), directed by Franklin J. Schaffner from a screenplay by Michael Wilson & Rod Serling and starring Charlton Heston. The film was a critical and commercial success, spawning four sequels between 1970 and 1973. A second adaptation of the book was released in 2001 directed by Tim Burton as a loose remake of the 1968 film of the same name. A series reboot with a new production team called Rise of the Planet of the Apes was released in 2011 to critical and commercial success.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First American Edition First Printing. Planet of the Apes Vanguard Press 1963 1st ed. 1st American 1st printing. 246pp. "I am confiding this manuscript to space, not with the intention of saving myself, but to help, perhaps, to avert the appalling scourge that is menacing the human race. Lord have pity on us!" With these words, Pierre Boulle hurtles the reader onto the Planet of the Apes. In this simian world, civilization is turned upside down: apes are men and men are apes; apes rule and men run wild; apes think, speak, produce, wear clothes, and men are speechless, naked, exhibited at fairs, used for biological research. On the planet of the apes, man, having reached to apotheosis of his genius, has become inert. To this planet come a journalist and a scientist. The scientist is put into a zoo, the journalist into a laboratory. Only the journalist retains the spiritual strength and creative intelligence to try to save himself, to fight the appalling scourge, to remain a man. Out of this situation, Pierre Boulle has woven a tale as harrowing, bizarre, and meaningful as any in the brilliant roster of this master storyteller. With his customary wit, irony, and disciplined intellect and style, the author of The Bridge Over the River Kwai tells a swiftly moving story dealing with man's conflicts, and takes the reader into a suspenseful and strangely fascinating orbit." Translated by Xan Fielding. Original price of $4.50 printed on the front flap of the dust jacket. Near fine with very light wear, minor dust soiling to page edges, in jacket with tiny tears and little chips to spine ends, reverse repaired with a small piece of scotch tape at heel. (1970 movie directed by Ted Post written by Paul Dehn and Mort Abrahams based on characters created by Pierre Boulle in his novel "Monkey Planet"). A 4-page tabloid-size 'newspaper' produced to promote the first London screenings of the film: Special Crisis Edition of 'The Ape' dated Friday, May 1st, 3955, with striking headline 'Kill All Humans!'; articles linked to and photos from the film; mock adverts; competition and reproduction of film poster. Age toned and folded in half, otherwise VG. Uncommon - several such 'newspapers' were produced to promote the films in this series but I have not come across this one before and cannot find another for sale on the www. Photographs/scans available upon request.
