They were written between 1955 and 1959, after the completion of his novel Doctor Zhivago. Together with the novel and the Essay in Autobiography they belong to the last phase of his work which showed greater simplicity and directness than any of his earlier writings. ***The Cycle is entitled in Russian [---], an idiom which has no exact equivalent in English and means roughly "when the weather will be finer". The first thirty-four poems were completed in 1956 and, in an interview which Pasternak gave to foreign journalists in December 1938, he stressed his preference for his new manner and asked his foreign publishers to bring out this cycle. The remaining nine poems, headed [---] were completed in January 1959 and reached them that year.'
