No Binding. Condition: Fine. Handwritten postcard signed by JRR Tolkien to Miss Kilbride Autograph postcard signed (JRR Tolkien), to Miss [Katherine or Kitty] Kilbride, giving news of the travails suffered that year and of his family, and complaining about the state of Oxford in the age of Morris Motors. The card reproducing in colours Josef Madlener's Heilige Familie (published in series of six by F.A. Ackermann), one page, closely written in a minute hand, minor creasing to corners and discoloration but overall in fine and attractive condition, 8vo, [Oxford], 24 December 1938. It is quite densely written and is a nice sampling of his handwriting. Footnotes The postcard showing the Holy Family walking through a Tolkienesque wooded glade with mountains in the distance - another such postcard by Joseph Madlener, entitled Der Berggeist (Mountain Spirit), executed in strikingly similar style, showing a white-bearded sage in a wide-brimmed hat feeding a lamb, was preserved by Tolkien in an envelope marked 'Origin of Gandalf'. That card, like ours, was published by Ackermann, albeit in 1935. Another link with The Lord of the Rings is the account Tolkien gives in our card of Oxford, which brings to mind the debased state of the Shire after Saruman's despoiling modernization: "Oxford is changing very fast and mostly (not wholly) for the worse. It is no longer a University town. The old dialect is driven off the streets, and the old shops are fast being replaced by the dreary semi-municipal architecture of a London suburb; the field for miles are covered with mass produced 'dormitories'. All to house an inessential (and indeed pernicious) industry [Morris Motors]. But people have done that sort of thing since the world began! This is an exceptionally early letter by Tolkien: only nine, two of them formal addresses, predating it in the collection published by Humphrey Carpenter, where ours does not appear; the main sequence of the published letters beginning in 1937 with Letter 10. The recipient is K.M. (Katherine or Kitty) Kilbride, who had met Tolkien when studying in Oxford, it is believed at a summer school, and is thought to have been teacher living at Bradford. Her copy of the The Hobbit was sold at Sotheby's New York, 13 December 2002, lot 152, for $75,000. Signed by Author(s).

Kein Einband. Condition: Wie neu. Ohne Schutzumschlag. 1. Auflage. Superb original picture postcard written and sent by Chandler from Palms Springs to his publisher Hamish Hamilton in London. Postmarked Palm Springs: 24th December 1957. A "Giant Post Card" with "Greetings from Palm Springs" printed on the front over a picture of Palm Springs Plaza sent by Chandler to his publisher "Jamie" (Hamish Hamilton) in London. In fine condition apart from some slight creasing and two punch holes, only affecting the letters "ut" in "but" and the first "l" in "alcoholic" in the second last line. This gem is as good as it gets: Address ("Hamish Hamilton, Esq., / 90(50?) Great Russell St., / London, W.C. 1, / England.") and text written entirely in Chandler's hand. The text reads as follows: "Dear Jamie: Here are so few of these oversized nonsenses that I may have sent you this one before. But don't kick me, I'm old and weak. Thanks for letter which I shall answer very soon. Went to a party last night at a home which is the ideal setting for the 8 million dollar girl Marlowe is going to be married to in my next after the one I am finishing up. They'll have a hell of a time squabbling. The party was elaborate but the same old thing. Elaborate catering and decorations, but the same loud empty alcoholic voices. Love to all. Ray." Note that "Jamie" is how friends called Hamish (Hamilton). At the time and as mentioned in the text, Chandler was putting the finishing touches on his novel Playback, which ends with Linda Loring ("the 8 million dollar girl" of The Long Good-Bye fame) calling Marlowe and asking him to marry her. This is the first time Chandler mentions marriage and the setting for the beginning of his last novel The Poodle Springs Story. This is one of the very, very rare instances that you will find and be able to buy Marlowe's name in Chandler's handwriting, since the few other examples (in the Notebooks) are forever confined to museums or other institutions. Also, we know of no other text of this length and content entirely in Chandler's hand. Practically all of his correspondence was typed. This item part of our Catalogue 9, which you can view at ygrbooks. Signatur des Verfassers.

ABOUT THE COMPLETE SET: Untitled (Baseball-Photographer Trading Cards) consists of 134 photo-offset lithographic reproductions of photographic portraits printed on individual "trading cards," with an additional card including a complete checklist of participating photographers. Photographs by Mike Mandel. Texts, statistics and quotes by the respective artists printed on verso (e.g., Ed Ruscha: "Everything you've ever wanted is right in your own backyard;" Bobby Heinecken: ".Critics often misspell his last name, hence he is often mistaken for the European beer player.") The cards were originally packaged with sticks of chewing gum by Topps Chewing Gum, Brooklyn, New York. From the artist: "The project satirized the phenomenon of the fine art photography community being consumed by the larger art world and commercial culture. I photographed photographers as if they were baseball players and produced a set of cards that were packaged in random groups of ten, with bubble gum, so that the only way of collecting a complete set was to make a trade. The reverse side for each card enabled the photographer to fill in their own personal data that referred to the information usually included on real baseball cards. In a sense, each photographer's response provides an insight about how they approached their participation." From Aaron Schuman, writing in Aperture 200 (Fall 2010): "Mandel's Trading Cards sit comfortably within this movement [the conceptual experimentation "with popular rather than 'artistic' forms of photography" practiced by such artists as Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari and Stephen Shore] -- the half-ironic, half-sincere reappropriation of everyday images and photographic contexts -- and also reflect an almost exaggerated unpretentiousness through the performances of many of their subjects. A baby-faced Larry Sultan (#13) is satirically pious as an altar boy, his two hands clasped around a baseball, his wide eyes aimed toward the heavens; a grinning Beaumont Newhall (#103) is subsumed by a face-mask and chest protector, jokingly playing the umpire-in-chief behind home plate; on the back of her card, Joyce Neimanas (#37) proclaims: 'You should bunt to sacrifice yourself to the runner'; and on the front of another.

Eleven full-page handwritten letters (one on back of brochure for UK edition of MURDER THE MURDERER); one 2-page letter (front and back); an inscribed review-style photo; and 4 postcards. Most of the letters open with either "Dear Rudolph Gilbert" or "Dear friend Gilbert"; each one is signed in full. No envelopes present; 3 postcards are addressed to Gilbert "c/o Santa Barbara Museum of Art," where he was assistant director. There are references to Miller's expenses (or lack thereof) sprinkled throughout the correspondence. Several letters mention, though not by name, Gilbert's essay "Between Two Worlds," for THE HAPPY ROCK (Berkeley: 1945), and various aspects of its publication. In a number of the letters, Miller comments on various books sent to or received from Gilbert and, in a few, he mentions meeting people in the general area. SOME HIGHLIGHTS - On 4/14/44, Miller thanks Gilbert for sending his new book, "Am saving the real reading for the new place I move into in day or two - a few miles down coast - up a mt. & quite inaccessible." He inquires about a picture sold "at show" for which he received $20, wondering which it was and who bought it. [There was an exhibition of his watercolors at the Museum, Feb. 6, 1944, but it seems unlikely the pictures would have been priced for sale there.] He adds at bottom, "I met Jeffers, did I tell you?" On 4/11/45, Miller explains the photo at the top of his Big Sur letterhead was taken at the "Beverly Glen place" and comments "Rather good, eh? [George] Katsimbalis, [Angelos] Sikelianos, and Anais Nin are plainly visible on the wall." One letter dated simply "Monday," mentions he is reading the proof of HAPPY ROCK, compliments Gilbert on his piece, and goes on to say, "Porter put out a beautiful book for me called SEMBLANCE OF A DEVOTED PAST - with reproductions in black & white of several of the water colors. Unfortunately [underlined] it costs $7.50. I get no free copies from him. Maybe the Museum can purchase it (?)" On 9/14/45, in a 2-page letter, "We don't know just when 'The Happy Rock' will be out - it's a question of paying the printer." He tells Gilbert, presumably meaning in exchange for a water color he is sending him, "It's not at all necessary for you to send me a book but if you can spare one, and if you have any of the following, I would gladly accept, and then goes on to list 12 books ("Oof! Quite a list to choose from!"). A postscript reads, "Yes, we do expect a child - this October. It will be called Valentine, whether a boy or girl." In the final letter, dated simply "Oct. 4th," we assume alluding to his work on what would be THE WORLD OF LAWRENCE: A PASSIONATE APPRECIATION (Santa Barbara: 1980) -- the last book published in his lifetime -- he writes, "You ask about my Lawrence work. I've shelved that for a long time to come. Must finish several others first." Altogether near fine.

Boards. Condition: Very Good+. Unique. Unique. Boards. A very illustrative and provocative manuscript songbook written by a Swiss / French regimental officer during World War I, named from the postcard citation, F. Mayor and that he signed it "Lausanne" suggesting he is writing, from, and/or stationed in Lausanne, Switzerland. The research on the manuscript eludes to the creator as Frédéric Mayor. It is not clear however if Mayor penned any of the lyrics in the notebook himself or this manuscript serves as a pictorial notebook of contemporary French language songs. The drawing styles suggests the postcard and notebook were hand drawn by one and the same. The historical account of these types manuscripts are full of possibilities including a lower ranking officer entertaining fellow troops with sordid tales of higher officer's exploits of sexual encounters with French sex workers with national song lyrics and drawings. The style of the uniforms illustrated point to Zouaves, North African based regiments, tropical uniforms with topee headgear, Imperial chasseur heavy cavalry wearing a cuirass suggesting the soldiers were engaged in the French Algerian War (1st) or these are French Foreign Legion officers by the red kepi/trousers worn. The women's fashion is illustrative of last quarter of the 19th century with pink gowns, frothy petticoats, and high up-do's indicative of Imperial age and exaggerated corsage, lingerie and balcony shape of the 1890s. These were high class French sex worker women of the late 19th century or turn-of-the-century. [J. Kearns]. The song lyrics, questionably are from a few named traditional songs of the period, for example: "Oh Bel Ange"; "À Travers des Barreaux de L'escalier"; "Je veux aller au Bal." Songs chosen for these types of songbooks "endeavored to include a fair proportion of songs according to the following classification: national and patriotic songs, folk songs, popular songs of the day, and hymns." [Morgan-Ellis, Esther M. "Warren Kimsey and Community Singing at Camp Gordon, 1917-1918." In Journal of Historical Research in Music Education Vol. 39, no. 2 (2018)]. In this case, many love songs. Otherwise, the lyrics may have been modified for whimsical purposes or mess hall entertainment. Songbooks of this example, were meant to be uplifting and kept the soldiers attached to idea of normalization ahd homelife, but also as a distraction in fantasy and sexuality. The postcard is dated 11-11-[19]12. The verso of the postcard is annotated: Sentinelle, No. 4 avancer [Advanced Guard] with one soldier in uniform labeled "Corporal." and addressed to Monsieur Paul Chesillol, Sargeant Fournier. The text inscription is loosely translated: Dear Sir: What are you doing? I am starting to get impatient. So I write myself. Never met to [shake hands], other than in written form. [indescipherable]. What can I say, this card is about me? I drew it for us. It's a changing of the guard at the barracks in Lausanne. They are soldiers of the 2nd French from the 7th Battalion Infantry.I'm waiting for news with impatience. With good greetings.[sic]--F. Mayor. It appears F. Mayor is writing to his friend, another soldier. Not uncommon, however, this collection of lyrics and illustrations are exceptional from the detail of the uniforms to the fashion of the women depicted in the pages. They are inked in black, with colored pencil. It is both playful and suggestive, a wonderful example of late 19th century French military history, fashion, and the recognition of sex work in the 19th century. Toning, rubbing, and evidence of dampstaining, else in very condition. Canvas tapebound over stamped board lined manuscript notebook. Pen and ink color illustrations with handwritten text. Approximately 180pp. [90pp blank], 60 color illustrations. With illustrated two-sided postmarked postcard with color pen and ink.

8vo (8" x 5"), white paperboard box with slip-off lid. 20 color and black & white postcards (6" x 4.25"), loosely inserted in an internal tray; titles in French printed on verso of postcards. Inscribed on front panel of lid in black ink: "For Polly and Henry with my love. Helmet, New York. 14. 3. 1977. P. S. A set of real French postcards.". A presentation copy of an early and exceedingly rare Newton publication, comprising twenty erotic postcards reproducing his photographs, inscribed to the noted fashion editor and stylist Polly Allen Mellen and her husband. First and only edition. This is one of only two examples that we have been able to trace. The other copy, which appeared in the trade in 2014, was inscribed by Newton in 1976 to Rudi Gernreich (1922-1985)-an innovator of twentieth century fashion, best known for his scandalous "monokini," or topless female swimsuit. Although identified as "Series No. 1" on the lid, no other series of Newton's postcards is known. Born in Berlin, Helmut Newton (1920-2004) was known for his radical, edgy and provocative photography. As documented in these photos, Newton preferred working outside the studio and often shot his models outdoors and in elegant mansions, villas and hotels. Newton pushed the boundaries of the fashion industry of his day with his often-sinister, erotically-charged imagery-leading some feminists to criticize his work. He began working for Vogue in the '50s, and soon-like Richard Avedon and Norman Parkinson-became one of the magazine's foremost photographers. While 1976 saw Newton's first recorded publication, White Women, the present postcards are variously dated from 1971 to 1975, evidently indicating publication prior to White Women. Newton's first group exhibition-at Emily Lowe Gallery, New York City-and his first solo show, at Galerie Nikon in Paris were both held in 1975. It is possible that White Box was published in connection with the latter. In any case, it is not listed among the photographer's known publications on the website of the Helmut Newton Foundation. Polly Allen Mellen (1924-) is a fashion editor and stylist who worked for Harper's Bazaar (under Diana Vreeland) and later Vogue (under Vreeland and Grace Mirabella)-her career spanning over sixty years. She served as a nurse's aide during WWII and moved to New York in 1949. At Harper's Bazaar she met her future longtime collaborator Richard Avedon, who initially found Mellen "too noisy." In time, however, Avedon would describe her as "the most creative sittings editor I ever worked with." Nicolas Ghesquiere has suggested that Mellen's work at Harper's and later Vogue came to "define a new, more modern ethos about clothes and how women wore them. With an almost playful daring, [the ethos] brimmed with a kind of strong, smart, unabashedly celebratory feminine independence-as well as an artful element of provocation and extravagance-that Mellen herself embodied and drew upon in her collaborations" (Ghesquiere, Polly Mellen). Over the course of her career, Mellen worked with such photographers as Newton, Avedon, Arthur Elgort, Irving Penn, Steven Meisel, and Mario Testino. Polly and Henry Wigglesworth Mellen (1920-2014) married in 1965. No copies recorded in OCLC. Apart from the copy offered by Peter Harrington in 2014 we find no other copies recorded, no sales records, nor any other mention of White Box. Altogether (8+1+1+1 =) 11 pp. on 2 bifolia and 3 single sheets. (Oblong) 8vo. Postcard with autograph address on verso. Unique collection of rare autograph documents by four prominent writers in Hebrew and Zionist leaders, the most extensive being an autograph manuscript signed by the children's author and poet Levin Kipnis (1894-1990), winner of the 1978 Israel prize. Originating from the early days of his career, it comprises a series of 5 poems, a prose work, and an epilogue, the final poem with an accompanying ink sketch of a seascape and a drowning person. With publisher's ink stamp (19 Nov. 1909). - Autograph postcard signed by Alter Druyanov (1870-1938) in Odessa to the poet Jacob Cahan in Geneva about his lyric work. With printed letterhead (1912). At that time, Druyanov was the editor of the weekly news bulletin "Haolam", founded in 1907 by Nahum Sokolow as the central organ of the World Zionist Organisation, published in Berlin in its first year. However, since the Zionist Executive considered it a burden on the budget and Western Europe did not appear to be the best place to publish a Hebrew journal, it was moved to Vilna in 1908, where it became the organ of the Zionist Organization in Russia, under the editorship of Alter Druyanow. In the spring of 1912, upon the initiative of Menachem Ussishkin, "Haolam" was moved to Odessa and continued its publication there until the outbreak of World War I. - ALS by the Zionist leader and writer Nahum Sokolow (1859-1936), pioneer of Hebrew journalism, to the head of the Jewish National Fund Menachem Ussishkin, introducing his friend H. Ruiper (Pisa, 19 Feb. 1933). - ALS by the educator and founder of the first Hebrew College for Teachers David Yellin (1864-1941) to a "dear friend". On headed stationery (Jerusalem, 27 March 1935). - 3 documents perforated. Postcard with a strip of adhesive tape, otherwise a very well preserved set.

Kein Einband. Condition: Sehr gut. Kandinsky, Wassily (1866-1944) - Autograph postcard twice signed "Bauhaus Weimar" - Russian painter and art theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as one of the pioneers of abstraction in western art. Autograph postcard signed "Kandinsky". Postcard, 5.5 x 3.5 inch, Staatl. Bauhaus Weimar, 1922 August (?) 5, stamp removed. Addressed to Dr. Joachim KIRCHNER in Berlin. Sender information shows the second Kandinsky "signature". Würde Ihnen also Ende September od. Anfang Oktober passen? Bitte Grüße von mir Ihrem Herrn Vater u. die Familie Wiedenfeld. Wir grüßen Sie herzlich." Translated: "Dear Doctor, Thank you for your card. I'm very sorry that I can't send my article on the requested date: I'm actually overburdened with very urgent work. On 14 we are traveling to the Baltic Sea for a month, where I would like to have a good rest. So would the end of September or the beginning of October suit you? Please give my regards to your father and the Wiedenfeld family. We greet you warmly." Because of the punch holes the exact date when Kandinsky wrote the card is unclear. The house number in the address was added later in pencil (probably by the Post Organization) and a date with the same pencil is written in the middle of the card - 17/8 which is presumably the day of delivery, August 17. Therefore I think that Kandinsky wrote the card August 5. Punch holes, else fine condition. COMES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY BY ANDREAS WIEMER HISTORICAL AUTOGRAPHS. The book s production details: Bound in blocked cloth with an inset printed-paper label; set in Sabon with Minion display; 600 pages; frontispiece and 9 colour illustrations; plain slipcase Condition of the book: fine with no flaws whatsoever. The postcard: Autographed and Signed Postcard, 5.75″ x 4.25″ Penned in German, in the hand of Sigmund Freud, and signed as freud . Dated Wien 2.X.34 (Vienna 2 October 1934), and mailed to E. Kempster in Lugano Switzerland. Near fine with bold writing and strong vibrant ink. In January 1933, the Nazi Party took control of Germany, and Freud s books were prominent among those they burned and destroyed. Freud remarked to Ernest Jones: What progress we are making. In the Middle Ages they would have burned me. Now, they are content with burning my books. Freud continued to underestimate the growing Nazi threat and remained determined to stay in Vienna, even following the Anschluss of 13 March 1938, in which Nazi Germany annexed Austria, and the outbreaks of violent antisemitism that ensued. This postcard was dated from 1934, during the final years Freud remained in Vienna. In Vienna during the 19th century, the script that was taught in schools was quite different from that in the non-German speaking parts of the world, and different as well from the German script of the present-day. This style of script is known as Kurrentschrift, and it was used in the same way that (some of us) use cursive today. Sigmund Freud, for instance, wrote letters, scribbled analyst s notes and signed his name, in Kurrentschrift. Although Freud is known to have signed his name in other ways, he often signed freud. The capital and lowercase F of Kurrentschrift are very similar in form, but not identical. The letter is shown translated below: I have received your lovely letter and thank you for it. Yours, Freud The postcard comes with the necessary paperwork. There is no doubt about the authenticity of the postcard and signature. Sigmund Freud is the father of modern psychoanalyis. Interpreting Dreams or Traumdeutung as it is known in its orginal German title is Freud s most popular work. Although the true first edition in German, published in late 1899, has not sold for almost a decade the book gained popularity and eight edition had been published in Freud s lifetime. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

One of the fathers of the gay rights movement, Ulrichs (1825-1895) penned the highly influential Forschungen über das Rätsel der mannmännlichen Liebe in which he first articulated his view that homosexual love was natural and biological. His subsequent writings have formed the foundation of all later research and his insights were eventually adopted by mainstream science. Holograph postcard (3" x 5.5") from Ulrichs (signed "Carlo Arrigo Ulrichs") to a bookseller in Emden, Germany regarding his publication Alaudae. Ulrichs has settled in Aquila, Italy towards the end of his life and from 1889 to his death in 1895, he published the literary review Alaudae to promote the international use of Latin. He refers to several subscribers of the journal, including "a bishop and a reigning majesty .' Although difficult to determine, it appears the card is dated 20 April 1889. Ulrichs correspondence is extremely rare.

90 : 140 mm. Small area of faint toning at upper right touching portrait, scattered remnants of prior mounting verso. 3 with loss at upper right affecting only postage stamp. Enrico Caruso was travelling a lot throughout his career. This is also documented by this group of 13 postcards, each with an Autograph Note Signed, Caruso," Enrico," or E Caruso," to various recipients, including Enrico and Ada Giachetti, Selma Stieglitz Schubart, Met treasurer Frank Garlich, and others, in Italian, English, French, or German. 5 of them are showing a portrait of Caruso, mostly sending greetings from Saint Petersburg, Saint Paul (MN), Cincinnati, Niagara Falls, New York City, Key West, Florence, or elsewhere.Enrico Caruso became the most admired Italian operatic tenor of the early 20th century and one of the first musicians to document his voice on recordings. He made his La Scala debut with La Bohème (1900). In 1901, after being unfavourably received in his performance in L elisir d amore in Naples, he vowed never again to sing in Naples, and he kept his word. World recognition came in the spring of 1902 after he sang in La Bohème at Monte Carlo and in Rigoletto at London s Covent Garden. He made his American debut in Rigoletto at the opening night of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City on November 23, 1903, and continued to open each season there for the next 17 years, presenting 36 roles in all. His last public appearance his 607th performance with the Metropolitan Opera was as Eléazar in La Juive (December 24, 1920). Caruso was the highest paid of his contemporaries worldwide. He made recordings of about 200 operatic excerpts and songs; many of them are still being published. His voice was sensuous, lyrical, and vigorous in dramatic outbursts and became progressively darker in timbre in his later years. Its appealing tenor qualities were unusually rich in lower registers and abounded in warmth, vitality, and smoothness.

Kein Einband. Condition: Sehr gut. Picasso, Pablo (1881-1973) - Postcard with autograph note signed (excellent provenance) - Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, playwright and one of the greatest and most influential artists of the 20th century. Postcard signed "Picasso". Postcard, 6.0 x 4.25 inch, n.p., n.d. The postcard representing Picasso's home in Vauvenargues. The card also bears the signature of his wife Jacqueline as well as those of the Zervos couple, editors and friends of Picasso. From top to bottom: handwritten by Yvonne Zervos, in French: "proprieté de Picasso. Nous sommes heureux. Yvonne Zervos. Nous pensons à vous avec amitié". Translated: "Property of Picasso. We are happy. Yvonne Zervos. We think of you in friendship". She also wrotes the recipient's address. After that we see two handwritten lines written by Pablo Picasso, in Spanish: "He tenido mucho gusto en verle. Picasso". Translated: "I've been very pleased to see you Picasso". At the bottom of the card we see the signature of Jacqueline Roque/ Picasso (1927-1986) followed by that of Christian Zervos. Fine condition. The Zervos couple met Picasso in the 1920s. Christian, art critic and editor of Cahiers d'art, regularly publishes articles on contemporary painters. Particularly appreciating the works of Picasso, he wrote a catalog raisonné of his works over several decades, with the collaboration of the master. He also helped to make Matisse and Braque known. His wife Yvonne manages the family gallery which exhibits great contemporary artists, in particular their friend Picasso. In the summer of 1964, the Picasso s invited the Zervos to stay at their home in Mougins, accompanied by René Char. The recipient of this postcard is Carlo Frua de Angeli, a wealthy industrialist from Milan, a great collector of contemporary paintings and a friend of Picasso and Zervos. He is also the ex-husband of artist Mary Callery, who exhibited with Picasso in the 1930s. As for the Château de Vauvenargues represented on the postcard, it is a favorite of Picasso, in 1958 he bought the building from which he could admire the Sainte Victoire. Excellent provenance: comes from Frua de Angeli's estate. COMES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY BY ANDREAS WIEMER HISTORICAL AUTOGRAPHS. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions.
