Item Description: Printed for T. Egerton, 1813. First edition. 12mo. Three volumes, bound in contemporary brown speckled calf. Green morocco title labels and gilt rules to the spine. "Charleton" embossed in gilt to upper board of each volume. Half titles present in each volume. A tall copy with each volume neatly rebacked, retaining most of the original spines with repairs to the joints and corners. Internally clean with occasional minor marks or foxing and a couple of marginal closed tears to leaves in volume III. Bookplate to the verso of each front endpaper. A very good example of Austen's most popular novel, now rarely encountered in a contemporary binding. The author's second and most famous novel, which has become one of the most prominent literary works to come from the nineteenth century. The first draft of the novel was written under the working title of 'First Impressions' in 1796. In 1797 Jane Austen's father wrote to the publisher Cadell to ask if he would publish the novel. The offer was rejected by return of post. In 1800 The Minerva Press published a novel by Margaret Holford entitled First Impressions, which probably led to Austen changing the title of the work. In the following years, Pride and Prejudice was heavily rewritten and the copyright eventually sold to Egerton in 1812. There is no record of the number of copies of the first edition, but Keynes suggests 1500 as the probable print run. The book was well received and the first edition sold out within the year and one contemporary reader wrote, "I have finished the Novel called Pride and Prejudice, which I think is a very superior work. I really think it is the most probable fiction I have ever read." The association with Susan Carnegie is intriguing. Born in Edinburgh, she lived at Charleton from her marriage to George Carnegie in 1769 until her death in 1821. She was one of the most prominent early feminists who ". learned to challenge the idea that women were intellectually less able than men, choosing instead to explain discrepancies in terms of women's educational opportunities and their general treatment in a patriarchal society. Certainly in her correspondence Susan was fearless in drawing attention to a lack of respect or of rudeness on the part of male writers." (Oxford DNB) As a rule Regency binders removed the half titles so copies in contemporary bindings retaining them are rare; the copies in such prominent collections as Sir Geoffrey Keynes's and R.W. Chapman's all had no half titles, nor do the Bodleian or Cambridge University library copies. Gilson A3; Keynes 8; Sadleir 62b. Bookseller Inventory # 32494

Item Description: London Printed for John Murray, 1816. First Edition of "Emma" Uncut in a Contemporary Binding [AUSTEN, Jane]. Emma: A Novel. In Three Volumes. By the Author of "Pride and Prejudice," &c. &c. London: Printed for John Murray, 1816. First edition. Three twelvemo volumes. (Measures 188 x 110 mm). [4], 322, [1]; [4], 351, [1, printerís imprint]; [4], 363, [1, advertisements] pp. Bound without the half-title in volume I, which is very common since this leaf was printed as part of the last signature and was therefore either overlooked (and left in place) or discarded by many binders of the period. Even copies in original boards often lack this half-title, most notably the Mount Bellow copy, described in 1933 Sotheby's sale catalogue as "in the finest possible state." Contemporary and almost certainly Continental, possibly German original quarter red paper spines over marbled boards, gilt-stamped on spines in Gothic style "Emma By the Author of Pride and Prejudice." Most certainly this book was sent straight from the publisher to the binder in sheets. Overall, a fine, fresh and entirely uncut copy in a contemporary binding, wanting one rear flyleaf. Minor rubbing to upper joints of volume I and II and the lower joint of volume II. Housed in a red morocco backed clamshell. Emma was published on 29 December 1815. "2000 copies were printed, and of these the records show that 1248 were sold by October 1816" (Gilson). The first American edition appeared in Philadelphia in 1816 and the first French translation in Paris in the same year, with a partial reissue in Vienna in 1817. No further editions are known until Richard Bentleyís reissue in his Standard Novels series in February 1833. Gilson A8. Keynes, Austen, 8. Sadleir 62d. HBS 67001. $45,000. Item Description: Murray, 1816. First edition. Three volumes. 12mo, 173x100mm. Bound in contemporary half calf, over marbled boards, showing the faint overprinting with ruling and titles for a ledger book. Complete with all three half titles, the one to volume one being bound at the rear as called for when present. A very good set indeed with wear to the spines and corners and some minor superficial repairs to the spines of volume one and two and the joints of volume three cracking but holding firm. Internally, exceptionally clean and fresh with no tears or chips and just occasional light foxing and a mark to O2r in volume one. Overall a pleasingly authentic set of this popular novel, rarely found with all three half titles in a strictly contemporary binding. The author's fourth and penultimate book published in an initial print run of 2000 copies shortly before she died. Contemporary reviews were mixed; one critic commenting "there is no story whatever, and the heroine is not better than other people; but the characters are all so true to life, and the style so piquant, that it does not require the adventitious aids of mystery and adventure". Rarely encountered with all three half titles. Bookseller Inventory # 33854

Item Description: Murray, 1816. First edition. Three volumes. 12mo. Early plain grey boards with morocco title labels on the spines. Pages uncut and all half titles present (vols. II and III, none called for in vol. I). Joints tender with a small chip to the base of the spine on vol. III, but very clean internally with just a pale stain to the end of vol. II affecting the reverse of the last page of text. Hinge of one volume repaired. A nice and very authentic set. The author's fourth and penultimate book published in an initial print run of 2000 copies shortly before she died. Copies of Emma with half titles are uncommon, and uncut pages are usually only found in the very few copies surviving in original boards. We think it likely that this copy was not bound on purchase like most copies, but rebound sympathetically in keeping with the original at a slightly later stage, when the fragile boards disintegrated. Contemporary reviews were mixed; one critic commenting "there is no story whatever, and the heroine is not better than other people; but the characters are all so true to life, and the style so piquant, that it does not require the adventitious aids of mystery and adventure". Item Description: London: for John Murray, 1816, 1816. 3 volumes, duodecimo (177 × 102 mm). Early nineteenth-century half calf, marbled boards, red sprinkled edges. Early ownership inscription shaved by the binder's knife at the head of vol. 3 title. Somewhat worn at extremities, front joint of vol. 1 starting, some slight offsetting and browning, still a very good copy. Half-titles discarded by the binder, as usual. First edition of the last completed of Jane Austen's novels, fully displaying her mastery of free indirect speech, an innovation in the English novel. She had fallen out with Egerton over publication of Mansfield Park and transferred to Murray, who published the second edition of that book and the first edition of Emma on the same terms: each was published at the author's expense, with profits to the author after payment of a 10 per cent commission to the publisher. In keeping with Murray's stated views on edition sizes, 2,000 copies were printed. Emma is the only one of Jane Austen's novels to bear a dedication, unwillingly made, to the Prince Regent, the arrangement of which generated a richly comic correspondence between the author and the Prince Regent's librarian. Item Description: London Printed for T. Egerton, 1814. Contemporary Marbled Boards [AUSTEN, Jane]. Mansfield Park: A Novel.By the Author of "Sense and Sensibility," and "Pride and Prejudice." London: Printed for T. Egerton, 1814. First edition. Three twelvemo volumes. [iv], 360, [iv]; [iv], 294; [iv]; [iv], 354, [iv], pp. Wanting the half-titles, but with all terminal blanks. Contemporary half gray polished calf over marbled boards, gilt-stamped spines, rebacked to style. Boards rubbed as expected, previous owner's contemporary signature on title pages and armorial bookplates with faint off-setting. Overall, a very good and attractive, clean set in a contemporary binding. "Mansfield Park is the most condensed and complex novel ever written by Jane Austen, and is her first novel that was conceived, written, and published at her mature years. Even though it lacks in the playful ironic humor which is so characteristic of Austenís other novels, it is the novel that most clearly shows another aspect of the writer: her philosophical anxieties, her social concern, and her mature feminism. Austen seems fearful of the impact change and progress has on traditional life including its morals, beliefs, and behavior. As a result her themes revolve around change, the battle between good and evil, character, dependency, and independence. The subtle battle between good and evil is one between the moral forces of the serene Mansfield Park, and the amoral intruders whose "London values" pose a threat to the traditional ways of Mansfield" (A. Hassapi) The third of Jane Austen's novels to be published was begun about the same time as Sense and Sensibility and was accepted for publication. The novel was published in May 1814 in an edition apparently of 1250 copies. John Murray later expressed 'astonishment that so small an edition of such a work should have been sent into the world'. Gilson A6. Keynes, Austen, 6. HBS 67564. $17,500. Bookseller Inventory # 67564

Item Description: George Allen. London. 1894, 1894. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. FIRST THOMSON EDITION. Octavo. (7.6 x 5.4 inches). Beautifully illustrated throughout with 101 fine line engravings by Thomson. Finely bound in early full dark blue morocco by Zaehnsdorf. Raised bands on spine, with gilt piping. Compartments ruled, lettered and fully decorated in gilt. Triple gilt ruled borders on boards. Board edges with double gilt ruled lines. Blue silk doublures and free endpapers, elaborate gilt tooled floral roll to turn-ins. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. One of an unspecified number of copies which were issued by the publishers with untrimmed fore and lower page edges, presumably for rebinding as they were issued in a plain green binding with a printed paper label. A small amount of rubbing to the extremities but still overall a very near fine copy and a beautiful piece of book production. -------- One of the best, and most popular, illustrated books of the late nineteenth century. Thomson illustrated this work for George Allen publishers before going on to illustrate the other Austen books for Macmillan & Co. This is the scarcest of all the Thomson/Austen titles in first edition. Bookseller Inventory # 9549
