Item Description: James R. Osgood, Boston, 1882. Hardcover. First American edition, first issue with Franklin Press imprint. Publisher's deluxe binding of half-calf and marbled papercovered boards. The paper on the edges of the boards is a bit worn, and some rubbing to the extremities, as almost always seems the case, else a nice, tight, very good or better copy, with the spine gilt easily readable. On a lark a prince and a pauper change stations in life, allowing Twain to critique various legal and moral injustices. A nice copy of a classic children's tale, scarce in the deluxe binding. *BAL* 3402. See this book in 3D on our site. Bookseller Inventory # 98648

Item Description: 1882. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. With One Hundred and Ninety-Two Illustrations. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1882. Original publisher's half morocco with gilt-decorated spine, and marbled boards and leaf edges. First American Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law. This was actually published in December 1881, just after the London edition and the Montreal copyright edition.~In this copy, the text is in the corrected state on pages 124, 263 and 362 (there were actually several printings bearing the date 1882).~This copy is in the publisher's original half morocco, one of several bindings available to the purchaser ar varying costs. According to a contemporary prospectus, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER was available in the usual green cloth (with or without gilt edges), "library" binding (full sheep), half calf, or -- as here -- half morocco.~This copy is in near-fine condition (minor wear to the edges of the paper-covered boards, but scarcely any wear at all to the morocco); the front endpaper is cracked and reglued. All of these leather bindings are considerably scarcer than the green cloth one, and are rather scarce in this condition. McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3402. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase. Item Description: 1881. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. With One Hundred and Ninety Illustrations. London: Chatto & Windus, 1881. 32 pp ads dated Nov 1881. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young. The London edition was intentionally published before the American edition, for copyright purposes; it was published in late November 1881, followed quickly by (or perhaps simultaneous with) the Montreal edition, and then the (1882-dated) Boston edition in mid-to-late December.~This copy has the primary ad catalogue dated November 1881, and is in near-fine condition (spine slightly faded, but less so than usual). This English edition is much scarcer than the American edition, perhaps because it came out during the brief period when the ill-conceived idea of stapled books was in effect (staples quickly proved to do the job miserably, so binders reverted to using string). McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3396. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case. Bookseller Inventory # 9305

Item Description: James R. Osgood and Company, Boston, 1882. Half Leather. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾", up to 9¾" tall. 192 illustrations. Half leather over marbled boards, with full marbled text block, marbled endpapers, five raised bands on the spine, red leather backstrip with title, black leather backstrip with author, and gilt detailing between the raised bands. First edition/second state text, but with Frank Press imprint and preferred deluxe half calf binding. Leather and boards are rubbed and significantly chipped at their edges, leather is chipped 1/16" at the tail of the spine, rear board has a 1/4" x 1/4" chip to the marbled paper and several closed tears to the paper which appear to have been repaired. Spine remains attractive with bright gilt. Backstrips are slightly rubbed, with very slight surface cracking. Hinge is cracked between two front and rear flyleaves, but the boards are securely attached by the crash cloth. Front free endpaper is torn about 2" where it meets the binding; rear free endpaper is torn about 1.5". Light chipping to the fore-edge of the ffe. Slight, occasional foxing and soiling throughout, but overall the interior is clean and bright, with no markings. Binding is square. Overall, this copy is in only good condition, but it remains an attractive addition to any shelf. We are happy to take photos upon request. Bookseller Inventory # L1062

This 7.25 x 9.5, 284-page hardcover book is the first printing of this title featuring the artwork of Franklin Booth. Mark Twain's first printing of the book dates back to 1881. This book features eight full-page color illustrations that highlight the timeless storyline. This copy is in very good condition with the cloth covers showing some age and handling wear. The front panel with the gilt decoration and lettering, and a color picture pasted down, is again in very good condition showing some rubbing. The spine and back panel again show handling wear and some scuffing to the back cover but really all in all the book is in very nice and good condition. The interior ffep shows the removal of a bookplate which has left a paper "scar' on the page but really little damage of any note. Beyond that the text pages show little wear and no real damage or condition issues needful of mention. All in all a nice copy of this timeless tale. Bookseller Inventory # 517-601
