New York, Macmillan, 1977. 8vo. Original cream cloth over green paper covered boards, titled green to spine, with printed dust jacket; pp. x, 286; a very good copy with a little wear to the jacket and some very minor foxing. First US edition. Also known as Inhabited Island, this science fiction novel follows the planet-hopping protagonist Maxim Kammerer who gets stranded off-world. The book was originally published in parts through the literary magazine Neva, and then again as a novel (with changes as required by the state censor) in 1971.This is the first translation into English (Jacobson) which is based on the censored version of the novel. The Strugatsky Brothers, Arkady and Boris, published many highly acclaimed works of science fiction, mostly in the latter half of the 20th century. Though the works were largely printed in Russian originally, many were later translated into English, German, French and Italian.

Signed
First British paperback edition. Octavo, pictorial wrappers. Signed by both the Strugatsky's on the first leaf. "This novel from the Strugatskys' Noon Universe is not just about a space traveler from Earth crash landing on an alien planet and finding himself stuck there for years. It's also about the journey from naivete to understanding-in terms of power structures, belief systems, and one's own limitations. It is, indeed, a science fictional bildungsroman borne out of the stresses and hardships of Soviet psychological and literary censorship; and as always, the Strugatskys deliver." - review by Rachael Cordasco 24 May 2020 for a new edition of the work, now titled "The Inhabited Island." Made into a feature film in Russia, in two part, released in 2008 and 2009. A fine copy. Unread. Rare signed. (29152).
