Neuware - Public Universities in Sub-Saharan Africa have been undergoing challenging times. This is directly linked to cutbacks in the government budget and subsidy in higher education on one hand, and the rapid increase in the demand for higher education on the other hand. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of privately sponsored students programmes on efficiency and equity in university education. Since these programmes are fee-paying and private in nature, the study adopted its theoretical framework from the economic theory of privatization, which states that privatization (of education services) improves efficiency, increases output and lowers costs.Although the introduction of the Privately Sponsored Students Programmes has led to congestion and overstretching of the already inadequate teaching and learning facilities, the gains cannot be ignored. The management of public universities and stakeholders should work towards streamlining the Privately Sponsored Students Programmes to ensure its sustainability alongside Quality Assurance Measures, guided by prescribed Performance Indicators. 224 pp. Englisch. Item Description: Book Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: Springer, Berlin | A New Cultural Revolution? | This book examines the privatization of Higher Education in North China. It highlights the unique political, economic and cultural background of China and focus on different practices of and rationales behind privatization. | The book will make both empirical and conceptual contributions to the debate on privatization of Higher Education(HE) in China. Empirically, it aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of privatization of HE in North China. To this end, I chose Beijing as a case for analysis and visited nine HEIs. The case study strategy is also complemented by extensive review of national policies to reveal problems beyond the specific case of Beijing and of national concerns. The effects of the cultural and socio-economic background and the unique state-party controlling system on HE management will be stressed. Conceptually, most existing studies on privatization of HE in China adopt a policy analysis approach while research on privatization of other public sectors or in other countries is frequently guided by economic theories. This book thus tries to combine both social policy and econometric approaches to provide a systematic and detailed investigation of the privatization process in the HE sphere. It also improves the understanding of the applicability of western theories in the Chinese context. | Chapter 1: Introduction - This chapter explains the aim and scope of the book. Chapter 2: Higher education in China: local, national and global context - This chapter provides the background for privatization of HE in China. Chapter 3: Privatization of higher education: theoretical underpinnings - This chapter conceputualizes privatization of HE in the Chinese context. Chapter 4: Implementation of privatization: scale and scope - This chapter aims to answer how privatization is implemented by looking at the development of the private HE sector, and the privatization strategies adopted in publish HEIs. Chapter 5: Financing higher education: changing rationales for funding - This chapter examines the financial aspects of HE in terms of revenue and expenditure. Chapter 6: Control and regulation of higher education: innovated university governance - This chapter looks into the control of HE from three aspects, i.e. educational regulation, institutional autonomy and the mechanism of HE control. Chapter 7: Rethinking privatization of higher education in China: lessons and impacts - This chapter concludes the book by evaluating the privatization of HE in China in terms of effects and problems. Item Description: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, Germany, 2011. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 220 x 150 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This book examines global pressures for and national responses to privatization of higher education in SSA by closely analyzing the Ethiopian and Kenyan cases. It particularly focuses on the analysis of the forces that trigger privatization policy across SSA and whether and how national policy making adjusts global privatization imperatives to local conditions by focusing on issues of quality and equity in higher education. Taking the Ethiopia and Kenyan cases, it argues that privatization is a global solution for local problems of higher education in the Ethiopian and Kenyan cases. Much of the impetus for the current privatization policy comes from global opinion makers who are responsible for creating and sustaining higher education crises. National policy makers in the cases have adopted privatization policy uncritically to their respective systems only to end up in another series of higher education crises. Item Description: Springer Dez 2013, 2013. Buch. Book Condition: Neu. 235x155x13 mm. Neuware - The book will make both empirical and conceptual contributions to the debate on privatization of Higher Education(HE) in China. 124 pp. Englisch. Bookseller Inventory # 9783642383021

Summary: "The authors make a compelling case for the importance of preserving the "Public Purpose University" if our nation is to sustain a highly educated citizenry and a strong capacity for innovation. They provide useful facts and figures concerning the decline in public funding of higher education in recent years as well as insightful recommendations for sustaining these critical institutions. Academic and political decision makers should heed their call for sustained and informed debate, and action, at the national and state levels." - Nils Hasselmo President Association of American Universities.
