Book Description: New York. ., 1844. [4],344,12pp. Original printed wrappers bound in modern red cloth. Upper margin of front wrapper with 4 x 1 inch loss, obliterating word "Proceedings." Occasional fox mark. Else very good. First edition of the printed proceedings of this famous court-martial resulting from the Somers mutiny. Mackenzie was in command of the brig, Somers, when it sailed for the African squadron with dispatches in September 1842. During the return voyage, some crew members conspired to mutiny, and Mackenzie had two men executed, one of them being Philip Spencer, nephew of the Secretary of War. There was much public outcry and controversy regarding the case, but Mackenzie was exonerated. Herman Melville's cousin, Guert Gansevoort, was one of the officers on the ship, and this case was possibly a source for Melville's short novel, BILLY BUDD. SABIN 43426.
