Covers very good, back somewhat tanned; spine slightly cocked; binding sound, pages very good, with notes & marginalia in ink near beginning and at end, some tanning. 263 pages; 8 X 5.25 X 0.5; 14 oz. shipping weight. A classic work dealing with what appears to have been a dirty deal negotiated between Rutherford B. Hayes, the first of a long line of mediocre presidents to emerge from Ohio, and Samuel Tilden, then Governor of New York. However, it's more complex than that. The 1876 election was very close and, for a variety of reasons, the Electoral College was unable to decide a winner, upon which it was to be decided by the House of Representatives which favored Tilden slightly, and when they couldn't decide, an election commission was created which finally decided in favor of Hayes, but only after agreeing that federal troops should be removed from the South.
