In original tan cloth, gilt lettering and pictorial pastedown on head of top cover. With correct 3-line publishing statement on copyright page and matching correct date of 1912 in Roman numerals on title page. This copy also has publisher adverts of other Zane Grey titles on the copyright page, all of which were published before Riders of the Purple Sage. NOTE: This would make this copy a later state as the first state had no publisher adverts on the copyright page. There is also a later printing of the first edition in 1912 but it has a copyright code. Several months after Riders was first published in January of 1912 is when Harper began using its well-known copyright codes. CONDITION: VERY GOOD Riders of the Purple Sage is considered by literary scholars to have played a significant role in shaping the formula of the popular Western genre, the novel has been called "the most popular western novel of all time" and has been made into several Hollywood film adaptations. The setting is Southern Utah canyon country, 1871. The influx of Mormon settlers from 1847 to 1857 serves as a backdrop for the plot. The Mormons had been living in Kirtland, Ohio, in the 1830s, but ventured west to escape local religious persecution. Condition Report: VG Slight spine lean and front hinge just a bit loose. Spots of soiling to cloth and page edges. Rubbed spine tips and corners. Small cut at heel of spine. Spine gilt has sun-darkened and faxed. Original owner book owner stamps on front endpapers along with owner inscription and date of September 9, 1912. Text block is generally clean and bright but with a periodic smudge or light spot of foxing. A few pages with creasing.

First edition (Published January, 1912 with matching roman numerals at bottom of title page), very good cloth hardcover with gilt letter and illustration at top portion of front cover shows touch of soil and shelf wear to covers including light dulling to gilt letter at spine, touch of soil to page edges, name at top of front endpaper and top of page 1 as well, along with some other light trace wear, married to a good, later, Grosset & Dunlap dust jacket that shows exposure toning along spine, wrinkling, rubbing, soil and staining, and edgewear that includes closed tears and open chipping, and tape mends as well, and even with all this still looks decent. 335 pages with four illustrations by Duer including tissued frontispiece. Still a pleasing first edition copy of this classic western that is arguably one of the best ever.
