Item Description: Douglas Cleverdon, Bristol, 1929. Jones, David (illustrator). Quarto. 37pp., + (8)ff. plates. One of only ten copies in the most limited state, with two extra loose suites of engravings and an original signed pencil drawing housed in a portfolio inside the rear cover. Illustrated throughout with ten masterful engravings on copper, comprising eight full-page plates and two smaller images which serve as head- and tailpieces. The extra suite of prints contains fifteen proof engravings by Jones printed on cream Japon without the background tone, including the five engravings which were discarded and not used in the final version. There is also a full suite of the ten published copper engravings in the final state, printed on handmade paper with a light gray background tone. The original drawing is one of ten that Jones saved from the almost 200 sketches and working drawings that he made in preparation for the copper engraving; the rest were destroyed. The original drawing included is the third plate, titled "The Death Fires," and is remarkably close to the final version of the engraving, showing the ship in limbo upon the still sea, where "slimy things did crawl with legs." Bound in original vellum by Wood and London with the title in gilt on the spine. Slight bowing to covers, and two of the portfolio's flaps are starting to split. One of the few works executed by Jones with copper engravings, and one of his most stunning achievements. (See The Artist and the Book, 136). Bookseller Inventory # 25787

Item Description: Douglas Cleverdon, Bristol, 1929. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Jones, David (illustrator). Limited Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. No. 31 of 60 copies with extra suite of engravings in final state and SIGNED by David Jones on the limitation page (total edition was 470 copies). David Jones (1895-1974) was both a writer and an artist; as a writer, he was one of the first-generation British modernist poets and was highly regarded by both T.S. Eliot and W.H. Auden. As an artist, he learned wood and copper engraving from Eric Gill, providing illustrations for the Golden Cockerel Press, for which he engraved the Cockerel itself in 1925. This set of copperplate etchings is considered one of his finest, with his style perfectly complementing the poetry. Jones is "often likened to William Blake because of his achievement in two arts and the religious vision that pervades all his works" (Horne, pg. 264). ***DESCRIPTION: Bound in natural linen cloth with gilt lettering on the spine, top edge gilt, fore-edge uncut, limitation statement at the front showing this to be no. 31 of sixty copies signed by the artist, with an extra set of the engravings in their final state, signed by David Jones on this page, the ten engravings throughout the text with the two small engravings serving as a headpiece and tailpiece, the extra sutie of engravings enclosed in a pocket on the rear pastedown; type Arrighi, printed at the Fanfare Press, London, folio size (just over 12.25" tall), pagination: (i-viii), 1-37, printer's statement (38). ***CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, gently bumped corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings; we had a professional do some minor repair to the head and tail of the spine, the spine has darkened and shows some minor soiling, boards somewhat dusty. The extra suite of engravings is fine. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the Abe standard does not always cover costs; please contact us for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help. Signed by Artist. Bookseller Inventory # CNJL568

Item Description: London: The Arcadia Press, 1972, 1972. Folio. Original half vellum, handmade "seaweed" paper boards, spine with gilt titles direct, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, green endpapers, calligraphic-style text printed in green and black on handmade seaweed paper, made using a process in which seaweed is pressed into the paper, reproducing with striking likeness the transluscent quality of submarine flora. With the original cream paper slipcase. Two tiny white specks to front free endpaper due to production flaw; slipcase with minor rubbing to extremities and light bowing to fore edges. A bright and fresh copy. With 10 tipped-in colour plates. Signed limited edition, number 86 of 110 copies signed by the illustrator Errol Le Cain, the calligrapher David A. Howells, and the paper maker Philip H. Rowson. The contrast of Le Cain's boldly colourful illustrations with the delicate quality of the pressed seaweed peppered throughout the text lends itself particularly well to the subject of Coleridge's epic poem. Item Description: London George G. Harrap 1915, 1915. The first edition in the publisher’s best binding. Profusely illustrated throughout by Willy Pogany, including 20 tipped-in color plates. A richly colored title page by Pogany begins this enchanting classic. With exquisitely detailed pages of intricately woven text and illustrations, enclosed in ornate borders. 4to, bound in the original dark-tan calf with finely tooled pictorial designs in gilt and colours on the upper cover and spine. [178] pp. A fine copy of this book in the beautiful presentation binding. The interior is virtually flawless and the binding is very handsome and beautifully preserved with virtually no evidence of use or age. A SUPERIOR COPY OF THIS GREAT BOOK. One of the most beautiful and decorative books of the period. The binding is quite attractive, the half-title is elaborately printed in gold, red and green; the title-page is a Morris-esque pastiche printed in gold, grey, red, black, purple, green, and yellow; the text is printed in an elaborate script within various woodcut borders, with various pictorial backgrounds in either light gray or green, sometimes accompanied by a vignette illustration. There are, in addition to the color plates, roughly ten full-page illustrations in black and either green or gray; and the pages that have no text or illustrations are filled with decorative elements in various styles and colors. One is reminded of the illuminated manuscripts of Sangorski and Sutcliffe and the amount of decoration on each page of their creations. This is certainly a tour de force by Pogany. The dark green cloth has dec. gilt-stamping on front, with spine letters reversed in gilt; olive green eps, a.e.g. Condition: corners bumped and extremities worn, with raw places sealed a bit amateurishly, but not bad looking. The all-original cover is further enhanced with gilt-embossed albatross, and blind dec. paneling. There is some "bubbling" in cloth cover (probably a reaction to the 125-year old glue therein. Back cover, also with blind decorative paneling, shows moderate scuffing and discoloration from the elements and time, but there are NO water stains, coffee cup markins, or any other injurious blemishes. Binding is firm and straight. The front end papers (original) have minor wear, back eps are quite good. Printed pages and plates throughout are Vg to Nf and a pleasure to behold. Item Description: Publishing House "Kozhanaya Mozaica" ("Leather Mosaic"), 2012. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. No Jacket. 4to. 158 p. Weight 1,46kg. Reprint. Language: Russian. The longest major poem by Coleridge, illistrated by Gustave Doré was written in 1797–98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. The poem may have been inspired by James Cook's second voyage of exploration (1772–1775) of the South Seas and the Pacific Ocean. The tale relates the experiences of a sailor who has returned from a long sea voyage. The mariner stops a man who is on the way to a wedding ceremony and begins to narrate a story. The wedding-guest’s reaction turns from bemusement to impatience to fear to fascination as the mariner’s story progresses. The poem is illustrated by magnificent engravings of noted French artist, Gustave Doré (1832-1883). Translated from English by Apollone Korinthsky. Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772 – 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. Coleridge coined many familiar words and phrases, including suspension of disbelief. He was a major influence on Emerson and American transcendentalism. Gustav Doré (1832-1883) was an amazingly prolific artist of 19th century. Among his many works are illustrated editions of 'Paradise Lost', the Bible and 'The Idylls of the Kings'. EDITION AND BINDING SPECIFICATIONS: Reprinted. 4vo. Limited edition of 100 signed and numbered copies (this is #3/100). The book is individually hand-sewn and bound in hand-crafted and tooled full maroon shagreen. Custom-made cream paper “Olin” by Arjowiggins. The covers elaborately hand-tooled in gilt and blind embossing. The spine divided into five panels, with gilt and blind embossing compartments, lettered in the second and in the third, the others with floral and ornamental tools with raised bands tooled in gilt. The hand-marbled paper doublures and endleaves. Doublures ornately hand-tooled in gilt. Top edge gilt and hand engraving. The fore edge and bottom edge are sculpted by hand. Silk ribbon. Contained within a custom-made matching wood-pattern paper with shagreen edging slipcase.(The colors shade captured on photos may slightly differ from the original).
