Wenn das Wort Schottland fällt, denken die meisten Deutschen wohl spontan an die Highlands mit ihren wild grandiosen Szenerien, ihren Felsklippen und Wasserfällen, ihren Mooren und Heideflächen, ihren schroffen Bergen, reißenden Bächen und malerischen Seen. Man sieht urige Typen vor sich, angetan mit Kilt und kariertem Tartan-Plaid, hat den Klang der Bag-Pipes im Ohr, und womöglich denkt man auch an das Lied, das die Sehnsucht nach dieser Landschaft so eindringlich ausdrückt wie kein zweites: 'My Heart s in the Highlands', geschrieben von Robert Burns (1759 - 1796). Erstaunlich allerdings, daß Robert Burns, der schottische National-Poet schlechthin, diese schottische Region nur ein einziges Mal besucht hat im Sommer und Herbst des Jahres 1787, als er auf drei Touren zunächst die westlichen, dann die zentralen Highlands erkundete und zuletzt noch ein paar Wochen bei Freunden in Stirlingshire verbrachte. Er war eben Lowlander, für den das 'Land im Norden' eine ziemlich fremde (fremdsprachige!) und ziemlich exotische Welt darstellte. Andererseits hat ihn die Begegnung mit dem 'Lande Ossians' in zunehmenden Maße beeindruckt und befeuert zum Dichten genau wie zum Sammeln und Aufarbeiten alter schottischer Volkslieder und -weisen. So verdanken sich nicht bloß seine spitzigen Epigramme über rauhe Straßen und faule Wirte, sondern von den 'Birks of Aberfeldie' bis zum 'Castle Gordon' auch einige der schönsten Lieder des Barden eben dieser Highland-Exkursion. - Wir versenden aus unserem deutschen Lager heraus in plastikfreien oder wiederverwendeten Polstertaschen.
