Book Description: Eliot, George [Evans, Mary Ann] ROMOLA. London:Smith, Elder, 1863. 3 vols. First edition, unrecorded remainder binding. Original terra cottacloth, gilt. The front free end paper excised fromeach volume, each volume slightly cocked, else alightly rubbed bright set in an interestingbinding (RH cloth, honey-comb pattern, withelaborate blindstamping on the covers). The spinestamping suggests the general style of a laterbinder's cloth for a circulating library, butthere are no markings. The end papers arewaste-sheets taken from a magazine published bySmith, Elder, and the cloth type and heavy coverstamping are characteristic of publisher'sremainders. This would appear to be a salvagebinding. Carter does not describe this binding, nor do Baker & Ross, or any Eliot bibliographers. The printing was 2,288 copies. Baker & Ross A7.2.Wolff 2061. Book Description: William Blackwood, Edinburgh & London. 3/4 Leather & Paper Bds. Book Condition: Near Fine. Unknown. 12mo - 7-3/4" Tall (Large). Period binding of 3/4 brown calf over brown marbled paper bds with contrasting green marbled end papers and gilt titles on the spine. A unique example of this classic book rebound with real photographs mounted on stiff card stock interspersed with the text pages. These photos are hand- titled in pen by the (assumed) individual who had this bound. His name and date in pen (Curtis T. Perry Paris, Oct. 10, 1879) appear on the top right-hand corner of the title page and the script matches that of the photo titles. The book contains pps 1-252 and 35 photo plates which I assume have to do with the areas mentioned in the book as it looks like many of these match places and buildings in corresponding chapters. Volume I only of an apparent 2 volume custom bound set. Undated by the publisher but likely from the 1878 edition published 2 years prior to her death in 1880. Quite attractive as well as unique! 12mo - 7-3/4" Tall (Large). Bookseller Inventory # 018494

Book Description: Leipzig: Berhard Tauchnitz, 1863. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy of the Tauchnitz edition in the same year as the Smith Elder British and the Harper American first editions. Two volumes bound in cream vellum with gilt titling and decoration in gilt, red and blue, including gilt decorated blue Morocco label-like panels at head and foot of boards and spine. Covers somewhat darkened and rubbed here and there; a damp-edge mark on one spine - would probably clean up with care, but still charismatic, strong, sound binding with gilt and grey-green printed foliate design on the endpapers. All edges red-dyed.The feature of this "de-luxe" edition is some 50 contemporary photographs each mounted on card, mostly of historic scenes in Florence (Firenze). These are numbered and must be from the stock of a photographer working for the tourist market. A nice item. Bookseller Inventory # 6450

Book Description: Readers Library, London, 1924. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Photoplay Edition. "Eliot, George" (Mary Ann Evans). ROMOLA (English Film Tie-In Edition]. London: Readers Library, [1924]. A Near Fine copy (spine gilt just slightly faded and the postwar paper is a little brittle as usual) in an exceedingly FINE original dustjacket. We've handled dozens of copies of these beautifully designed British photoplays but this is truly one of the most exceptional in terms of fine original condition with virtually no wear to the dustwrapper and a superb illustrated cover art rendition of Lillian Gish as George Eliot's Romola. Distributed in tandem with the English movie release of MGM's 1924 silent film adaptation. Interesting editorial prologue specific to the edition which discusses the film.
