Trade Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 32 Pages. A 1977 Reprint of the 1971 Edition. Stapled binding with no defects noted. One of the first things seen by a visitor to Durham is the great bronze knocker on the Cathedral doors. Today it serves no purpose other than ornamental. But it is a reminder of the fact that for several centuries, over a thousand folk were to be found each year in the refuge afforded at the great sanctuaries throughout the land. To fugitives fleeing from the scene of a crime the eyes staring at them from the knocker and its prominent jaw holding the bronze ring, were a welcome sight. It signified that they had reached the inner bounds of the great sanctuary of Saint Cuthbert at Durham. The Durham records of Sanctuary were published as long ago as the first year of Queen Victoria and since only five hundred copies were printed it is almost impossible to obtain one. The standard work on English sanctuaries was published in 1911. Since that time, very little has appeared dealing with this fascinating aspect of life in the past. This small book should serve to regain interest in the curious story of the Sanctuary.
