Item Description: McFarland. PAPERBACK. Book Condition: New. 0786465700 During World War II the Japanese imprisoned more American civilians at Manila?s Santo Tomas prison camp than anywhere else, along with British and other nationalities. Placing the camp?s story in the wider history of the Pacific war, this book tells how the camp went through a drastic change, from good conditions in the early days to impending mass starvation, before its dramatic rescue by U.S. Army "flying columns." Interned as a small boy with his mother and older sister, the author shows the many ways in which the camp?s internees handled imprisonment--and their liberation afterwards.Using a wealth of Santo Tomas memoirs and diaries, plus interviews with other ex-internees and veteran army liberators, he reveals how children reinvented their own society, while adults coped with crowded dormitories, evaded sex restrictions, smuggled in food, and through a strong internee government, dealt with their Japanese overlords. The text explores the attitudes and behavior of Japanese officials, ranging from sadistic cruelty to humane cooperation, and asks philosophical questions about atrocity and moral responsibility. Item Description: Paperback. Book Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Santo Tomas Internment Camp was the largest of several camps in the Philippines in which the Japanese interned enemy civilians, mostly Americans, in World War II. The campus of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila was utilized for the camp which housed more than 4, 000 internees from January 1942 until February 1945. Japan attacked the Philippines on December 8, 1941 the same day as its raid on Pearl Harbor on the Asian side of the International Date Line. Despite several hours of anticipation that a Japanese attack was imminent, most of the American air force was caught on the ground and destroyed by Japanese bombers. On the same day, the Japanese invaded several locations in northern Luzon and advanced rapidly southward toward Manila, capital and largest city of the Philippines. The U. S. army, consisting of about 20, 000 Americans and 80, 000 Filipinos, retreated onto the Bataan Peninsula. On December 26, 1941, Manila was declared an open city and all American military forces abandoned the city leaving civilians behind. On January 2, 1942, Japanese forces entered and occupied Manila. They ordered all Americans and British to remain in their homes until they could be registered. This item ships from La Vergne,TN. book. Bookseller Inventory # 9786200499264

Item Description: The Woodruff Printing Co, Lincoln, NE, 1945. First Edition. A light-hearted record of life in the Santo Tomás Internment Camp, a civilian detention facility run by the Japanese army from 1941-1945. As many as 5000 designated enemy aliens, mostly American and Australian citizens, were held at Santo Tomás between 1941 and 1945. Illustrated throughout with humorous drawings and caricatures of both internees and their Japanese "hosts". Though McCall is able to find humor in his situation, conditions at Santo Tomás are said to have been extremely brutal; male internees lost an average of 53 pounds during their period of detention, and disease and death, especially among older internees, was rampant. An uncommon survival of that experience, in exceptional condition. Octavo (22cm). Pictorial stiff card wrappers; 146pp. Very mild external wear; pictorial elements on front cover bright and un-rubbed; VG to Near Fine. Bookseller Inventory # 19547
