The covers have some creases, light color loss at the joints, wear at the edges and an area to the front cover where the coating seems to be missing. The edges are also lightly soiled. However, there are no creases to the spine, the interior is clean, bright and without rips, tears, highlighting or underling. The paperback edition of the book published on March 25, 1992 by a company called The Consortium, Inc. This was a publishing company, comprising some sixty entities, and incorporated in the state of Delaware for the express purpose of bringing out a softcover issue of The Satanic Verses. Originally published by Viking in London on September 26, 1988, with the first U.S. edition by the same publisher following on February 22, 1989. Signed by the Author to half title. Author's fourth novel. Winner of the 1988 Whitbread Prize for Fiction. Shortlisted for the 1988 Booker Prize (losing out to Peter Carey's Oscar and Lucinda). Gibreel Farishta, India's legendary movie star, and Saladin Chamcha, the man of a thousand voices, fall earthward from a bombed jet toward the sea, singing rival verses in an eternal wrestling match between good and evil. A whimsical and fantastic tale, as viewed through the prism of a magical realist lens. Its publication ignited an on-going debate on the dividing lines between freedom of expression, censorship, and religious tolerance. The book's reference to several verses that Satan allegedly tricked Muhammad into including in the Qur'an, and which were later expunged, as claimed by the controversial Arabian historian Ibn Ishaq, were the main source for the fatwa (religious edict) conferred upon Rushdie by Iran's spiritual leader, the Ayatollah Khomeini. It was officially lifted by his successors in September 1998 and the state-sanctioned reward nullified. Despite all this, Rushdie was repeatedly stabbed at the Chautauqua Institution in New York state on 12 August 1922, as he was about to deliver a lecture. He ruefully reflects on this attack which caused him to lose sight in his right eye, as well as the use of his left hand, in his 2024 memoir, Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder. A single small area of soiling to the upper board, and a small area of staining to the rear pastedown. A very good copy, lacking the dust wrapper. It would appear that Morgan was utilising this copy for the basis of a review, lecture or critical essay, but I can find no record of a resulting work having been published.

The story was inspired by the life of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. In near fine condition, the binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. There is a small crease mark to the top corner of the front board and minimal shelf wear to the top edge of the spine. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. There is a mark to the bottom edge. The unclipped dust jacket is in very good condition with wear to the corners, slight nibbling to the top edge of the front cover, nibbling and wear to the top edge of the spine and nibbling and a crease to the top edge of the bottom edge. Will be dispatched carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a book box.
