Book Description: Geoffrey Bles, London, 1942. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First British edition of The Screwtape Letters in very good condition. The pages are clean and book is free of odors or foxing. In a clear brodart protective sleeve. On the first free end paper is taped a review of the Screwtape Letters from the May 3, 1942 Sunday Times. Placed in the book is a review of the book from the Ushaw College Magazine written by Father Robert W. Meagher. Above the review on the ffep is written, " Reviewed by 1. Ushaw Magaine, Father Robert Meagher, D.D.,Ph.D., M.A., Vice President of Ushaw College and loose leaf p. 53 from Ushaw Mag.2. Sunday Times. May 3, 1942." A 400-YEAR-OLD Catholic seminary that served the north of England, was originally founded at Douai, France, and moved just outside Durham where it trained hundreds of seminarians. Father Meagher wrote of the the exile of the catholic priests from Douai to Ushaw. "As far as can be ascertained about one hundred and fifty Douai men met their death in England for the sole reason of their priestly character or religion, and so far ninety of them have been beatified by the Holy See.Old and young, the Douai martyrs met their fate with much courage and piety. and even if the horrors of the death they were to undergo momentarily unnerved some, yet the giace of God triumphed in the end and secured for them everlasting joy. This much at least can be said here: at no other time in the history of England were men, many of them refined and cultured scholars, subjected for so long a pei iod to such coldly deliberate and bestial penalties. The grace of God alone can explain their milaeulous patience and fortitude. That is why the Church has beatified so many of our countrymen and honours them on her altars. and that is why we Catholics of' England should be so proud of them and so grateful to God for what they succeeded in preserving for us.".
