A sequel to the previous year's successful "Secrets of the Deep", yet considerably rarer. Illustrated by Seuss with many large aquatints. Color pictorial paper covers; Volume I has slight browning to edges of a rather clean, bright copy; Volume II has some light wear along spine. Each with thirty-four numbered pages of delightful tongue-in-cheek illustrations and text addressing issues of sailing a ship. Seuss understood advertising really well and this is a fine example of the blend between artistic and commercial genius. First Edition. 8vo - 5-15/16" x 9". Color pictorial paper wrappers with light toning and signs of handling including a 1" x 3" light crease to the upper right hand corner effecting the front cover and the first three pages of the book. Thirty-four numbered pages of humorous text (which never fails to tout Essomarine products) and red, white and blue illustrations by Dr. Seuss illustrating various aspects of sailing a ship (with tongue always firmly in cheek). Also included are two pages of advertising for Essomarine oils and greases and a handy reference chart specifying which Essomarine product to use in specific makes and models of inboard engines in use in 1934. This publication is a good example of Dr. Seuss's ability to combine his artistic and literary abilities in a commercial endeavor with the end product being an advertising piece like no other. A humorous guide for novice boatowners with covers and illustrations by Dr. Seuss. Vol. 1 is a second issue printing with a 1935 date on the inside cover, an ad for a new Essomarine lubricant on page 16, a white background on pages 16-17, and 3 cities listed under Standard Oil on rear cover. Vol. 1 is in very good condition with some light soiling to the covers. The text is clean and fine. Vol. 2 is good with some soiling and wear to the covers. The upper right and lower right corners of the front cover are a bit creased. The text is very good with some light soiling and wear and the ink stamp of a yacht club at the foot of the first page.
