Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition, published by The Hogarth Press in 1944. A bi-lingual edition in German and English, with a detailed 35pp Introduction to Hölderlin by the translator J. B. Leishman. ***Near fine in orange-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. Boards beautifully clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine just slightly creased. Lower rear corner slightly bumped. With a neat ownership name to the top of the front free endpaper. Although printed on war-economy paper, the contents are very well preserved and clean, with just very light foxing to the page block edges. ***In a very good printed dustwrapper, which is complete with only a little edge wear. Just very slight loss at the edges of the folds. The dustwrapper retains the original publisher's printed price of 8s. 6d. The spine of the dustwrapper is quite browned but the titles are still very clear and unfaded. The dustwrapper is printed on nice quality thick textured paper. ***133 pages. 220mm x 142mm. ***'Johann Christian Friedrich Hölderlin 20 Mar 1770 - 7 Jun 1843) was a German poet and philosopher. Described by Norbert von Hellingrath as "the most German of Germans", Hölderlin was a key figure of German Romanticism. Particularly due to his early association with and philosophical influence on Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling, he was also an important thinker in the development of German Idealism.' ***'The poetry of Hölderlin, widely recognized today as one of the high points of German literature, was little known or understood during his lifetime, and slipped into obscurity shortly after his death; his illness and reclusion made him fade from his contemporaries' consciousness - and, even though selections of his work were published by his friends during his lifetime, it was largely ignored for the rest of the 19th century.' [Wiki] ***Selected Poems: the German text chosen and translated, with introduction and notes by J. B. Leishman. ***The first impression of the true UK first edition, published during the Second World War. A nice wartime edition of Friedrich Hölderlin's poetry in collectable condition. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
