Also includes a history of the Grand Army of the Republic [GAR] and a history of the Sons of Veterans. Includes hundreds of engravings made from sketches of battles and camp life, celebrating the hard life of Civil War soldiers. Includes many two-page spreads, and most of the engravings are half-page size or larger, plus color plate of Army Corps badges. Large volumes, 17" x 12", in medium brown cloth, gilt and black lettering and decorative illustration featuring a soldier on the front covers, 421 + 482 pages. Covers heavily worn with numerous tape repairs to the spine of volume I, most spine lettering affected, spine of volume II heavily chipped at both ends but with most printing intact, volume I text block separated from covers, hinges of volume II heavily internally cracked but holding, text blocks sound, pages a bit age-yellowed but clean, frontis portrait of Lincoln from volume I detached and heavily chipped around the edges, pages good with some occasional light edgewear but no chips or tears.
