Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. John Berkey (illustrator). First Book Club Edition. 5 3/4 x 8 1/2 Inches. 183 Pages. Preceded only by the paperback original a few months earlier. SIGNED BY ALAN DEAN FOSTER AND BRIAN MUIR (THE ORIGINAL SCULPTOR OF DARTH VADER) DIRECTLY ON THE TITLE-PAGE. Muir has added "Vader Sculptor" to his signature. This Book Club Edition is the FIRST hardcover printing of the original classic. Contains the all-important letter code of "S27" in the gutter of page 183. The first trade edition of Star Wars was not printed until after the release of both the paperback and this book club version. Cover art by John Berkey, who later did the artwork for the Return of the Jedi - Death Star Battle video game from Atari. A watershed book in the Star Wars canon. The book is spectacular. The dust jacket shows a bit of wear at the crown and foot of spine as well as the folds.

First edition, first printing, signed by the ghostwriter Alan Dean Foster on the title page, though solely credited to George Lucas. This novelization of Star Wars: A New Hope was published five months prior to the release of the film in May 1977 and represents the public's first encounter with a long-form story from the franchise. The book proved immensely popular and sold millions of copies before the theatrical premiere. Ralph McQuarrie, the illustrator of the cover art, was a key visual concept designer for the films whose initial sketches were crucial in convincing 20th Century Fox to develop Lucas's new project. Foster's book version is "perhaps most notable for allowing its readers to experience the interiority of characters from the film. Although the film establishes Leia's willingness to shoot the stormtroopers, the novelization allows its readers to imagine the consequences of her act more vividly by narrating the stormtrooper's thoughts and aspirations" (Webster, p. 51). The prologue here opens with "Another galaxy, another time" in lieu of the more familiar "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away." Jeremy W. Webster, "Leia Shot First: Transmedia Storytelling and the National Public Radio Dramatization of Star Wars", Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling, 2018. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers designed by Ralph McQuarrie, edges yellow. Ink stamp on bottom edge. Binding bright, expected light rubbing of wrappers and toning of leaves, else clean. A near-fine copy.
