Book Description: Random House, New York, 1942. First Edition. Octavo; red cloth, with titling and illustrations stamped in navy blue on spine and front panel; 215pp; illus. Contemporary owner's name and date (in pencil) to front endpaper; offsetting to endpapers, with some faint spotting to pastedowns, touch of foxing to top edge of text, and some trivial rubbing to extremities; Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $1.00), hint of sunning to spine, lightly edgeworn, with a few short tears, shallow chip at upper edge of rear panel, with foxing to verso; still a bright, Very Good+ example, and completely unrestored. First novelization of Superman, based on the character created by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel who first appeared in Action Comics #1 in June, 1938. Lowther, a writer, producer, and director in the early days of radio and television, wrote the novel for juvenile audiences, and is credited with providing many of the now-familiar details of Superman's birth and early life. A bright, unrestored copy of a title generally found read to death, and a timeless piece of Americana. Bookseller Inventory # 1583

Book Description: NY: Random House, 1942., 1942. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. The first book appearance of Superman. All other comic book super-heroes owe their existence to Superman. Too bad, I suppose, that Superman doesn't really exist in our present-day world. From the dust jacket: " . . . Millions of boys and girls in America have acclaimed Superman, champion of right and justice, nemesis of evil-doers . . . Where did he come from? . . . Whence came his super-strength and marvellous powers? . . . The story of his origin -- of his arrival on earth from a distant planet, of his boyhood and youth, of his first discovery of his super-powers, and of his dedication to the fight against the forces of evil. So here is his story, from the beginning . . . " An extremely scarce book in this superior condition: a NEAR FINE (or better) book in a VERY GOOD+ (or better) dust jacket. There are the required 4 full-color plates located in the pages of the book. They are in FINE condition. There are also dozens of black and white illustrations peppered throughout the text. The book is tight and square. The bright red full-cloth binding with the bright blue lettering and great illustration of Superman are beautiful. The pages are lightly tanned, but actually less than usual. The dust jacket is NOT price-clipped, showing the original $1.00 price on the flap. The dust jacket has undergone some professional, archival (no tape) repairs accomplished by a professional paper conservationist. There is no evidence of the repairs to either the front panel or the spine panel of the dust jacket. Therefore, the great full-color illustration of Superman flying on the front panel is in FINE condition. There is some evidence of the repair to the white back panel of the dust jacket, as would be expected. In that this was a novel intended for juvenile reading, an amazing survival; a very attractive book and jacket; apparently the best copy available on the Internet at the time of this listing. A MUST FOR THE SUPERMAN COMICS COLLECTOR AND/OR THE COLLECTOR OF PERIOD SCIENCE FICTION 1st EDITIONS! This is a cool book!. Bookseller Inventory # LOW001

Book Description: Original Scripts. (1) SUPERMAN I. Original Screenplay By: Mario Puzo. Final Screenplay by Robert Benton, David Newman and Leslie Newman. Revised July, 1976. // Tall format - 8.5" x 14" pages, bound with screw pins in blue covers with title in gold on the front. Contents: title page, pages numbered [1]-116. // (2) SUPERMAN II. Original Screenplay By: Mario Puzo. Final Screenplay by Robert Benton, David Newman and Leslie Newman. Revised July, 1976. All pages are white. Tall format - 8.5" x 14" pages, bound with screw pins in stiff, red covers with title in gold on the front. Contents: title page, page describing the four villains, pages numbered 1-130. // Both scripts have staining to some edges and light wear overall. The script for the first film has a small amount of silverfish paper loss along and above the lower edge of the last page, and there is minor chipping to a short length along the edges to that script's covers. // These scripts for SUPERMAN and its intended sequel were issued together in matching format. Both are early drafts dated nearly a year prior to the start of filming. The title page in each specifies the director as Guy Hamilton, who was replaced by Richard Donner a few months later. Robert Benton, David Newman and Leslie Newman wrote these drafts based on an earlier, original screenplay by Mario Puzo. More changes would follow before filming began. Uncredited writer Tom Mankiewicz would be hired to revise the screenplays before and during production, toning down some of the humor evident throughout these drafts. It was originally intended that both films be shot back-to-back. As it turned out, only part of the second film was shot by Richard Donner at the time he was making the first film. Some of that footage appears in the second film as released in 1980, along with other material shot (or re-shot) by new director Richard Lester when filming resumed in 1979. // SUPERMAN - THE MOVIE was released by Warner Bros. in 1978 and directed by Richard Donner. SUPERMAN II was released in 1980 and directed by Richard Lester (with some scenes directed by Richard Donner). Pierre Spengler produced for Alexander and Ilya Salkind. Christopher Reeve starred as Superman/Clark Kent, with Margot Kidder as Lois Lane, Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor, and Jackie Cooper as Perry White. Others in the combined casts included Valerie Perrine, Ned Beatty, Marc McClure, Marlon Brando, Susannah York, Trevor Howard, Maria Schell, Jeff East, Glenn Ford, Phyllis Baxter, Terrence Stamp, Jack O'Halloran, and Sarah Douglas. // FOR MORE ORIGINAL SCRIPTS, visit my AbeBooks homepage. //.
