Book Description: Privately printed: December, 1901. 16mo, coloured frontispiece and 41 black and white illustrations. Original grey paper boards, flat spine, decoration and titles to upper board in black. The boards a little chafed, extremities slightly rubbed, slight soiling on lower cover, otherwise an excellent unsophisticated copy of a fragile book. In a limp suede chemise and a felt-lined morocco folding box by Jeff Clements. Together with a sepia photograph (105 x 63 mm) of Zipporah Robinson enclosed in a folder and laid into the case. First privately printed edition, one of 250 copies. The true first printing of PotterÕs first and most famous book with the authorÕs signed presentation inscription on the front free endpaper: ÒFor Zipporah / from Beatrix Potter / Christmas 1901Ó. Zipporah Robinson was born in Derbyshire in 1846 and was a servant at Camfield Place, home of the authorÕs grandfather, Edmund Potter, where Potter and her parents were frequent visitors during the summers of her childhood. Potter was 27 and living at home when she wrote The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Five publisherÕs rejected her illustrated manuscript but Potter arranged for it to be privately printed by Strangeways and its immediate success launched her career. Inscribed association copies of the first printing are extremely rare; this copy, inscribed at the time of publication when she gave away several copies as Christmas presents to family and friends, unrestored and in relatively fine condition, is said to be the Òonly copy to contain a personalised presentation inscription by Beatrix Potter. The remaining copies [at auction] either contain simply her signature, publication details in her hand, or an inscription dated December 22 with no named recipient.ÓThe two copies in the V&A are inscribed, one in 1901 and the other in 1917. Osborne, p 382.Provenance: SothebyÕs lot #122, 19 May 1994. SothebyÕs lot #388, 12 July 2005. Private collection San Francisco. Bookseller Inventory # 105812

Book Description: POTTER,BEATRIX. ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR: TALE OF PETER RABBIT. This is a charming watercolor SIGNED AND CAPTIONED IN INK BY POTTER and dated August 1927. It was executed on paper measuring 5 1/4" wide x 7 1/4" high and is in fine condition mounted and hinged on acid free board. The signature is lightly faded else fine. The image shows the surprised meeting of Peter and Mr. McGregor in the garden with Peter's back to the reader and Mr. McGregor's startled expression on his bearded face. The actual image measures 3 " wide by 2 1/2 " high, and appears on page 38 of the first edition of the book. 1 inch below the image in Potter's hand is written "Round the end of a cucumber frame / whom should he meet but Mr. McGregor! Beatrix Potter / Aug/ 1927". Judy Taylor explains in her book Beatrix Potter (p. 167-8) that Potter did a series of watercolors to raise money to 'raise a fund to save a strip of foreshore woodland and meadow, near Windermere Ferry, from imminent risk of disfigurement by extensive building and town extension.' Taylor adds that "Many of these pictures were sold in America.and within a year enough money had been raised." She quotes Potter: 'It was a great satisfaction to me to have been able to help the fund through the kindness of my friends in America. Whenever I cross the ferry and look at the pleasant green banks I will think of the good friends across a wider stretch of water.' This is undoubtedly one of these watercolors done by Potter specially to be sold to help this fund, a few of which are in the V&A collection. It is a charming piece of original Potter artwork featuring Peter Rabbit. Bookseller Inventory # 25175

Leaf-patterned endpapers. A very good copy indeed. A clean and attractive copy, a light bump to the lower corner. The contents are clean and bright, apart from a small abrasion to the blank area of page 15 and a pin prick to pages 21/2. Hinges tight, binding in good shape, just a little looseness between gatherings. Illustrated throughout in colour by the author. This first published edition sees the first appearance of the colour illustrations. There are four colour plates which appear in this first issue which do not appear in later printings, including the cover illustration of Peter in his blue jacket and the image of Mrs McGregor (Beatrix Potter) with a pie. 100 years after its first publication this tale is as popular as ever, one of the true classics of children's' literature. Book Description: Warne & Co., LONDON, 1902. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. author (illustrator). 1st Edition. 24mo - over 5 - 5¾" tall. The First 2 years of the LONDON Publication of "The TALE of PETER RABBIT" have reference books about the various Printings/evolution of changes. I'm fascinated by it myself. Now, excluding the impossible First Private Printings in Late 1901 & Early 1902 from the realm of possibility for we mere mortals, the First few Original Warne Trade Printings are one of my joys to study - and even more to Find! Most collector's know that the First few Warne Printings (late 1902 - mid 1903) were done with patterned leaf end papers and had 97 pages with all illustrations in Color (Private Printings were B&W). The distinction between the printings was the Board Color. The last of these 4 printings changed "wept" to "shed". NOTE: NONE of These Printings had a COPYRIGHT DATE (on the rear of the Title Page)! Now, here is where it gets interesting!! All References deal with the Change in Format in Late 1903 from 97 pages to 85 pages with 4 fewer Illustrations, and the all important introduction of Color Illustrated End Papers. This is the book that mortals may hope to find and own.one of the first reduced Format (Some refer to it as the Second Edition because of that, but it is essentially the same book with all of the story identical to the Original with that one error correction - I leave such labels to the professionals - but I call it First Edition, later Printing). Now, so as not to get hung up on nomenclature, let's go to the First Printings of this version from Late 1903 to early 1904. The First Printing of this Format (Called the fifth Printing overall) is identified by what are referred to as "SINGLE PAGE ENDPAPERS". That doesn't mean there was only one panel. It means the two panels were identical, not with different characters! That is, they match. It is the ONLY PRINTING WITH THESE, Done in September/October 1903. The one thing that the references do not indicate is which of this run did not have any copyright, and which did!! Whatever the answer is, some were done with No Copyright and some with the FIRST APPEARANCE OF ANY COPYRIGHT, 1902! From what I can discern (and I am no expert here), this Printing is the Only One of these early ones to have had a copyright at all! If I'm wrong, some expert please let me know! Whatever the case, The Next Printing done in December 1903 had DOUBLE PAGE END PAPERS (Different Characters on the 2 panels) This is where my interest wanes.by early 1904 additional printings were essentially the same, but with variations in the characters on the end papers, and that gets tedious to figure out. _____________________________ FOR OUR PURPOSES HERE, if you are interested in a 1903 FIRST ILLUSTRATED END PAPER LONDON PRINTING, with what I believe is the RARE 1902 COPYRIGHT, YOU COULD NOT ASK FOR A NICER BOOK FOR CHRISTMAS!! It is essentially a Gem, with Lovely Deep Grey Boards, Perfect paste-on FULL SPINE with Bold Lettering to front & spine, all the dots with the o's and the SINGLE END PAPERS. The ONLY flaw in the book is the dated name in the center of the ffep, 1903. Interior Complete in 85 pages, all illustrations and original end papers. REMARKABLY CLEAN, with only issue being slight looseness of binding with a couple of signatures starting to separate (worst shown in images), but there are NO BROKEN THREADS! I do not re-glue books but the binder would easily be brought together by a pro. NO LOOSE or DAMAGED PAGES! WELL, THERE IT IS.ENJOY!. Bookseller Inventory # 000240

Book Description: POTTER,BEATRIX. THE TALE OF PETER RABBIT. Battledore Books 1995. This is a magnificnet Portfolio of prints from the original blocks with an appreciation signed by Maurice Sendak. The original first printing of Peter Rabbit was produced in 1901 by Potter herself after efforts at finding a publisher failed. She privately printed 250 copies of Peter Rabbit with a color frontispiece and 42 black line illustrations (including the cover). The blocks for this printing were only used one other time (for the second printing of 200 copies). Now, after nearly a century, the publisher has located 34 of these original blocks and has produced this wonderfully elaborate portfolio, LIMITED TO 250 NUMBERED SETS. Each illustration is printed on fine acid free paper and each has its own enclosure printed with the caption. All are housed in a cloth clamshell case with a leather label. The images are remarkably sharp and clean. Featured before the prints is a 20 page ESSAY BY MAURICE SENDAK - an appreciation of Beatrix Potter. Sendak's admiration for Potter is longstanding and having the association between Sendak - the greatest contemporary author/illustrator and children's book, and Potter - author of one of the greatest literary works for children, couldn't be more significant. It has been printed by letterpress and SIGNED BY SENDAK! Included with this portfolio is a wonderful block print by Potter made from the original zinc line-cut. It is previously unpublished and is a charming woodcut entitled "Come dance a jig, to my Granny's Pig. The print is housed in a printed folder and is accompanied by a descriptive commentary by Ann Hobbs (Curator and the V&A). This is altogether a most wonderful item for anyone who appreciates Beatrix Potter. Bookseller Inventory # 17370

Book Description: Kingston: Battledore, 1995, 1995. Soft cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. A Portfolio of Art Prints with an introduction by Maurice Sendak. Considered one of the greatest literary works for children, The Tale of Peter Rabbit was first privately published in 1901 in a limited edition of 250 copies and again three months later in 1902 (limited to 200 copies). Now, after nearly a century, thirty-four of the original line blocks used have been located and properly identified; they are separately re-printed for the third time only -- on fine mould-made deckle-edged 100% cotton acid free paper in a special limited edition of 250 numbered sets, each print individually certified with a stamp on its reverse attesting to its limitation. Production and design has been organized by Iain Bain — noted printing and wood engraving soecialist — working alongside Ælecto Historical Editions, who have re-struck original Audubon plates for the New York Historical Society and more recently were employed to create a definitive facsimile of William the Conqueror’s Domesday Book for the British Government. Renowned and celebrated author/artist Maurice Sendak has written an original appreciation for this series of prints, which has been letterpress printed as an accompanying booklet and signed by him on the numbered colophon leaf. The project has been coordinated by antiquarian children’s books authority Justin G. Schiller, with kind permission of Frederick Warne & Co. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # ABB041
