Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Later Printing. Carleton (1794-1869) first published his stories of the Irish peasantry in 1830, with additions later. He was a popular author, although controversial due to his anti-Catholicism; his later years were spent in poverty. Sadlier published several editions of his work. This is a Very Good copy of an unknown edition, Number VI of Sadliers "Fireside Library." The long first story identifies the volume ("Two Volumes in One") but also included are "A Peasant Girl's Love," "Talbot and Gaynor, the Irish Pipers," and "Frank Finnegan, the Foster Brother." There is no publication date, but per Worldcat, Quercus believes it to be 1854, which seems correct stylistically. Blue cloth binding, ruled on the covers and blindstamped with an Irish figure. The lettering on the spine is gilt, which also features a shamrock. Clean text; 322 pages. Contemporary award inscription on the FFEP. Although the wood-pulp paper has tanned, it is still viable and clear. Bumped at the corners; head and foot of the spine are rubbed. Despite these defects, this remains a very attractive small volume. Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
