Item Description: London George Newnes, 1892. The Fine "Ellery Queen" Copy DOYLE, A[rthur] Conan. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, 1892. First edition, first issue with no street name on the front cover, "Violent" for "Violet" on page 317. Large octavo (9 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches; 235 x 160 mm). [4], 317, [1, printer’s imprint], [2, blank] pp. With 104 illustrations by Sidney Paget in the text. Provenance: Detective story writers "Ellery Queen" (Manfred Lee) and "Barnaby Ross" (Frederic Dannay) names in ink on half-title. Original light blue cloth over beveled boards. Front cover and spine blocked and lettered in gilt and black. All edges gilt. Gray flower and leaf endpapers. Small ink initials to front free endpaper. Front hinge professionally and invisibly repaired, back hinge starting but firm. A slight bit of shelf-wear to top and bottom of the spine. Some light foxing to a few preliminary and final pages. Otherwise a near fine copy, exceptionally clean and bright. Housed in a tan cloth clamshell. "Rarely has a character so quickly established itself on the popular imagination as did Sherlock Holmes in the latter half of 1891." (Green & Gibson). "An avid reader of detective fiction since childhood, Dannay often discussed with Lee the possibility that they should write their own novel in the style of the erudite mystery writer, S. S. Van Dine. In 1928, using the name Ellery Queen, the two entered McClure's magazine novel-writing contest and, to their surprise, won. Before the work came to print, however, and before Dannay and Lee received their $7,500 prize money, the magazine folded. Fortunately the cosponsor of the competition, publisher Frederick A. Stokes, stepped in and in 1929 published The Roman Hat Mystery, which promptly sold 8,000 copies and thereby launched both the character and the "author" Ellery Queen." (American National Biography). Green and Gibson A10. HBS 64961. $17,500. Bookseller Inventory # 64961

Item Description: London George Newnes, Limited, 1902. First Edition "Hound" in the Original Cloth DOYLE, A[rthur] Conan. PAGET, Sidney, [illustrator]. The Hound of the Baskervilles. Another Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. London: George Newnes, 1902. First edition, first issue in book form (first serialized in the Strand Magazine between August 1901 and April 1902), with "you" for "your" on page 13, line 3. Small octavo (7 1/4 x 4 3/4 inches; 184 x 120 mm). [8], 358, [1], [1, blank] pp. With sixteen black and white plates (including frontispiece) by Sidney Paget. Original scarlet cloth decoratively stamped in gilt and black (in a design by Alfred Garth Jones) and lettered in gilt on front cover and decoratively stamped and lettered in gilt on spine. A few old ink sketches to front free endpaper, dated "1902". Overall, a near fine copy. In a custom red cloth slipcase. The Hound of the Baskervilles was based on an idea given to [Doyle] by Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who was a nephew of Sir John Robinson and a correspondent for the Daily Express during the Boer War. The two men struck up a friendship when travelling back on the same ship from Cape Town. They spent four days together on a golfing holiday at Cromer in March 1901, and it was then that Robinson mentioned the legend (possibly of the Black Hound of Hergest associated with the Vaughan family of Hergest Court in Herefordshire). Doyle told his mother: ‘Fletcher Robinson came here with me and we are going to do a small book together "The Hound of the Baskervilles"—a real creeper’.The serial publication was an unprecedented success. It was the only occasion in the magazine’s history that a seventh printing was needed to meet the demand, and the queues at the publisher’s offices and throughout the country were extraordinary" (Green and Gibson, p. 130). Green and Gibson A26. HBS 67096. $5,000. Bookseller Inventory # 67096

Item Description: London: George Newnes, 1902. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Paget, Sidney; Jones, Alfred Garth (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by Sidney Paget. First edition, first printing. Publisher's decorative red cloth binding designed by Alfred Garth Jones, with poster-style hound illustration in black and gilt to the front board, Art Nouveau decorative tooling to the front board and spine, lettered in gilt. Very good or better, with some light rubbing to the extremities, some soiling to the spine and boards, bright gilt, spine slightly tender, some light spotting to the page edges and endpapers, bookseller's embossed stamp to the front free endpaper, a few scattered spots to the otherwise clean pages. Green and Gibson A26a. Originally published serially in the Strand Magazine between August 1901 and April 1902, The Hound of the Baskervilles is Doyle's third novel to feature his detective character Sherlock Holmes. Like his previous two Holmes novels, The Hound of the Baskervilles is illustrated with black and white illustrations by Sidney Paget. The author had intended his second Holmes novel, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894), which concludes with "The Final Problem," a story that ends with Holmes falling to his death at the Reichenbach Falls after fighting with his arch nemesis Professor Moriarty, to be the final appearance of Sherlock Holmes. After much public demand, Doyle revived his character with The Hound of the Baskervilles, the most popular of the Holmes canon, which purports to be an episode earlier in the detective's career, chronologically prior to "The Final Problem." The story tells of a murder mystery at the Baskerville Hall country house that involves the Baskerville family's superstition surrounding a hellhound myth. The plot was largely inspired by Doyle's golfing holiday at Cromer in Norfolk in the spring of 1901, where he spent time with a young journalist friend named Bertram Fletcher Robinson, who told Doyle a legend about a haunting ghost hound in the moors of Dartmoor. The success of The Hound of the Baskervilles directly contributed to Doyle's resurrection of Holmes in The Return of Sherlock Holmes, in which Doyle explains how the master detective survived such an enormous fall. Alfred Garth Jones (1872-1955) was an English artist, illustrator, and book designer. Known primarily for his woodcuts, pen and ink line drawings, and watercolors, Jones' style is hallmarked by his bold, thick lines and his Art Nouveau aesthetic. Trained in both Manchester and Paris, Jones created many types of book art, including illustrations, bookplates, binding designs, and page decorations. Bookseller Inventory # ACD011

Item Description: George Newnes, Limited, London, 1892. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Sydney Paget (illustrator). Sydney Paget. Hardcover. FIRST EDITION, mixed state. This collection of short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) ensured his lasting popularity and fame. It includes such classics as "Scandal in Bohemia," "The Red-Headed League," and "Speckled Band." It was followed in 1894 by a second compilation, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. This volume is a mixed state: the front cover has a black and white illustration with a banner, "The Strand Library." The street sign is not blank. The end papers are the variant light orange peacock design. Page 317 has the uncorrected "Miss Violent" rather than "Miss Violet." Bound in the original blue cloth with gilt title and author to spine and front cover. Fraying to spine edges and beveled board edges, bumping and rubbing but still in nice condition. The hinges have been expertly restored. Interior pages are clean and bright except for what appears to be a small cigarette (or Calabash pipe?) burn affecting the bottom margins of pages 282-289. Page 285/286 has an actual burn hole. Illustrated throughout. Housed in light blue half morocco slipcase. 317 pages. LIT/072009. Bookseller Inventory # 21930
