[29] pp with 126 photographic illustrations, some double page. The first 29 pages contain comments by the photographer. He describes "the picture story, composition, color, and technique." Few remnant tape pieces along spine. Contains the laid in pamphlet "The Decisive Moment-Captions" that was not provided in the original French edition earlier in the same year. The French edition by Verve and the American edition by Simon & Schuster (The Decisive Moment) were conceived and composed by Teriade with the collaboration of Marguerite Lang. The engraving and printing is the work of the Master printers Draeger Freres of Paris. The Decisive Moment Cartier-Bresson's, The Decisive Moment, the 1952 US edition of Images à la sauvette. The book contains the term "the decisive moment" now synonymous with Cartier-Bresson: "There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment."Cartier-Bresson achieved international recognition for his coverage of Gandhi's funeral in India in 1948 and the last (1949) stage of the Chinese Civil War. He covered the last six months of the Kuomintang administration and the first six months of the Maoist People's Republic. He also photographed the last surviving Imperial eunuchs in Beijing, as the city was falling to the communists. From China, he went on to Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), where he documented the gaining of independence from the Dutch. In 1952, Cartier-Bresson published his book Images à la sauvette, whose English edition was titled The Decisive Moment. It included a portfolio of 126 of his photos from the East and the West. The book's cover was drawn by Henri Matisse. For his 4,500-word philosophical preface, Cartier-Bresson took his keynote text from the 17th century Cardinal-de-Retz: "Il n'y a rien dans ce monde qui n'ait un moment decisif" ("There is nothing in this world that does not have a decisive moment"). Cartier-Bresson applied this to his photographic style. He said: "Photographier: c'est dans un même instant et en une fraction de seconde reconnaître un fait et l'organisation rigoureuse de formes perçues visuellement qui expriment et signifient ce fait" ("Photography is simultaneously and instantaneously the recognition of a fact and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that express and signify that fact"). Both titles came from publishers. Tériade, the Greek-born French publisher whom Cartier-Bresson idolized, gave the book its French title, Images à la Sauvette, which can loosely be translated as "images on the run" or "stolen images." Dick Simon of Simon & Schuster came up with the English title The Decisive Moment. Margot Shore, Magnum's Paris bureau chief, did the English translation of Cartier-Bresson's French preface. "Photography is not like painting," Cartier-Bresson told the Washington Post in 1957. "There is a creative fraction of a second when you are taking a picture. Your eye must see a composition or an expression that life itself offers you, and you must know with intuition when to click the camera. That is the moment the photographer is creative," he said. "Oop! The Moment! Once you miss it, it is gone forever." Cartier-Bresson held his first exhibition in France at the Pavillon-de-Marsan in the Louvre in 1955. Shipping extra. Book Description: Simon and Schuster, 1952. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Cartier Bresson (illustrator). 1st Edition. Folio. Cartier Bresson's magnificent classic photobook in the original jacket. Large, (10 by 15) folio size, published by Simon & Schuster/ Editions Verve 1952, caption booklet laid in. Decorated paper covered boards and jacket illustration by Matisse. Book nice clean, bright, tightly bound, square, spine vg with just a little roughness at the edges else about VG+ & better than 95% we've seen. Jacket, bright, complete unclipped, handling/soiling wear, a couple of darker spots & a small thin faint red mark on back cover, some edge wear with a 1 1/2" piece out at spine bottom (not very noticible when on book as the jacket repeats the book illustration.) else about VG+, again better than 95% we've seen listed. This is a large & fragile book notoriously hard to find without spine flaws or jacket problems, this copy is very good indeed. The caption booklet has a darkened spine & some small tape here and there, the spine has pin holes as though it was bound in to something at one time, it's just a few pages which basically repeats the captions inside the book. 'The Decisive Moment' is quite simply one of the greatest of all photobooks the size and deep gravure reproduction makes these superb photos just stunning and one has to see a copy to appreciate the glory of this book. One of the great classics. The standard shipping rates will need to be adjusted on this title due to size, weight and price. Bookseller Inventory # 0006221

Book Description: New York: Simon and Schuster (1952), 1952. First U.S. Edition. Folio. Caption booklet laid in. Boards and dust jacket designed by Matisse. 126 images, lusciously printed, of Cartier-Bresson's early work. Only few photobooks in history can match the influence of The Decisive Moment. Since its publication in 1952, it has remained one of the pillars of photography. (Parr / Badger, v1, 208-209; Roth 134-135; Open Book 154-155). A little bumped at the corners and spine ends (with the hint of a concurrent bump barely visible at the top edge of the text block), edge dent to the top of the front board, still a clean, near fine copy in a close to near fine jacket with a few small edge tears and tiny chips.
