Item Description: Paperback. Book Condition: New. This item is printed on demand. Paperback. This lavishly illustrated book is the first full-length study of Inigo Jones as a stage designer. Jones designs for the Stuart court masques played a crucial role in transmitting the visual language of the Italian Renaissance tradition into English culture, and John Peacock examines the ways in which he adapted them from continental sources, many of them identified here for the first time. His exploration adds a new dimension to our knowledge and understanding of a figure who is generally considered the most important English artist of the seventeenth century. Item Description: Book Condition: very good. London, Isaac Ware [1731]. Quarto contemporary calf (label missing, front hinge cracked but firm); engraved title, 5 engraved pages listing plates on three leaves and 48 plates numbered to 53 (six double page of which five carry two numbers). A rather good copy, fresh and crisp, with the charming armorial bookplate of White of Lincolns-Inn which is handcoloured and touched with gold. I suspect this is William Archibald Armstrong White but there were a few Whites of Lincolns Inn. First edition. Ware's first substantial production as part of the Burlington circle, in a way a popular version of the grander book produced by William Kent in 1727. Here the designs are mostly those of Jones and Kent (one is Burlington's) but a few had not been published before. Eileen Harris pointed out in her note on the William Kent book that its greatest influence is apparent in the use of details - doors, windows, ceilings, fireplaces &c - and doubtless the same claim can be made for this book; there are many fine details. Item Description: London Published by I. Ware, 1733. Small folio, 255 x 165 mms., pp. [viii], 53 engraved plates, six of which are folding and comprise two numbers in the quantity of plates, complete as issued, bound in reversed panelled contemporary calf, marbled end-papers; fragment of label on spine but a very good copy. Inigo Jones (1573 - 1653) and William Kent (1685 - 1748) are responsible for most of the engravings, but one is by Lord Burlington (Richard Boyle, Third of Burlington, 1694 - 1753) and and another by the publisher and architect, Isaac Ware (1704 - 1766), on of Burlington's proteges. "The publication of many drawings by Jones and Webb from Burlington's collection by William Kent (1727), Isaac Ware (1731), and John Vardy (1744) provided a wealth of models for architects to the mid-century and beyond. The emphasis by the new movement on order and proportion was in Jones's spirit, but there was little creative response to his studies of the monuments of antiquity. Anyway these were superseded in the 1750s and 1760s by much more wide-ranging archaeological investigations. From that point Jones lost his cult status, though so long as classical architecture flourished in England his buildings were held in high regard" (ODNB). Bookseller Inventory # 8067

Item Description: [London]: I[saac] Ware, [1731]., 1731. small 4to. engraved title, pp. 5 engraved contents, & 48 engraved plates numbered 1-53 (6 folding - 5 assigned double numbers). contemporary calf, artlessly rebacked (corners, lower edges & spine ends damaged, title gutter margin strengthened & outer margin with small chip, some marginal soiling). First Edition. Ware's renderings, engraved by P.Fourdrinier, of designs by Jones and by William Kent, depict chimney pieces, ceilings, mouldings, staircases, garden seats and structures, and other ornaments. Kent is represented by more designs than Jones; and there is also one design by Lord Burlington of the piers at the entrance to Chiswick House and another, unattributed design for an alcove. Some of these designs were in Burlington's collection and had not been previously published. This small-format edition supplied a wider audience of craftsmen and others with patterns indicative of Burlington's taste than the expensive folio of Designs of Inigo Jones published by Kent in 1727. Item Description: hardcover. Book Condition: very good. [London] 1727. Two volumes folio bound in one, modern quarter calf with old marbled sides & what seem to be the original endpapers; in all 102 plates numbered to 73 & 63 respectively (double page plates carrying two numbers). A short tear neatly repaired, few smudges and the odd splotch; rather a good copy. First edition; without the portrait frontispiece as often but with an extra folding view of Whitehall (which matches the Avery copy according to Fowler and which is sometimes found in the later editions). Apparently this should really be called Webb's Designs (Jones' assistant John Webb seems to have been the author of much of this) but it did help stake out Jones as Burlington's property (and through him Palladio). Palladio's design of Santo Giorgio was added to the book as a comparative lesson - to show that his disciple Jones was no inferior - but the reason for adding some of Burlington's own designs is left to the reader's judgement. Harris (p.251) makes the point that this 'impressive and important' book's most influential and formative effects were the details, not the buildings: the plates of doors, windows, gates, chimneys, interiors, ceilings &c. Item Description: [London]: 1727., 1727. 2 volumes in one. Folio (21 4/8 x 14 4/8 inches). Engraved allegorical frontispiece after W. Kent, vignette title-pages with engraved portrait of Jones, 136 numbered plates printed from 102 copper-plates on 97 leaves (24 double-page, 5 folding) by P. Fourdrinier, H. Hulsbergh, J. Cole and A. Herisset, most drawn by Henry Flitcroft, the designs credited to Jones, Kent and Lord Burlington, engraved head- and tailpieces after Kent (without the half-title, intermittent light browning, one or two pale marginal stains). Contemporary half vellum, morocco lettering piece on the spine (extremities a bit scuffed, vellum lightly soiled). Provenance: with the 18th-century discreet ink library stamp of K.F. Stevens on the front paste-down; the bookplate of James Lees-Milne (1908-1997), architectural historian and conservationist on the front paste-down; and the bookplate of Harold Douthit also on the front paste-down. First edition. "The Designs of Inigo Jones is an impressive and important book. Yet oddly enough more influential than any single building depicted in it were its plates of doors, windows, niches, etc. These plates seem to have had a formative effect upon Gibbs's Book of Architecture (1728) and from that point on became a standard feature of eighteenth-century pattern books" (Harris p.251). The publication of 'The Designs' was initiated and funded by Lord Burlington, who had purchased a group of drawings by Jones and his pupil John Webb and 5 drawings by Palladio from Jones' collection in 1720. These were copied by Henry Flitcroft and, together with drawings by Kent and Burlington, engraved by Hulsbergh and others. Intent on promoting public works, in particular the building of a royal palace, Kent and Burlington devoted more than two-thirds of the plates in volume one to designs for a palace at Whitehall, even though this was the work of Inigo Jones's pupil John Webb. Volume one also included a plan, elevation and section of Chiswick House by Burlington, with chimneypieces by Kent. Volume two included the Queen's House at Greenwich, Burlington's dormitory of Westminster school, and a remarkable design for a palace on the Thames at Richmond.
