Book Description: London: William Heinemann, 1894, 1894. Octavo. Original dull gold pebble-grained cloth, pictorial decoration and titles to upper board and spine in black. Housed in a terracotta solander box made by The Chelsea Bindery. Mild toning to endpapers, spine very slightly cocked and with a trace of rub at the tips, a lovely copy in the exceptionally scarce printed dust jacket, with some minor loss at the ends of the spine panel, rather tanned and a little marked. First edition, first issue (the cloth is indicative). The second of two novels with South Seas settings written in collaboration with his stepson, The Ebb-Tide "had its origins in a much longer novel, The Pearl Fisher, planned in 1889; it is a grim and powerful story of moral depravity and evil whose four main characters Stevenson himself called 'such a troop of swine' (Letters, 8.107). There are parallels between The Ebb-Tide and 'The Beach of Falesá', regarded as one of his finest short stories" (ODNB). This is the only recorded copy of this edition known to have survived in dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 27986

Book Description: 1894. A Trio and Quartette. London: William Heinemann, 1894. 20 pp ads dated August 1894. Original (smooth) bronze cloth pictorially decorated in black. First English Edition of this novel Stevenson co-wrote with his stepson. The English edition was published two months after the Chicago one. This copy is bound in smooth bronze cloth, and has the rear cover device measuring 11/16-inch in diameter (some measure 3/4-inch). According to Carter, this smooth bronze cloth, with August 1894 ad catalogue, is one of the two primary binding states (there is also a pebbled bronze cloth, and a presumably-later smooth light brown cloth). This is a near-fine copy (a few small dents in the front cover, light rubbing at the extremities) of this attractively-bound book. Beinecke 602-605 (none of these four is quite the same as this copy); Princeton 56A, copy 1; Carter BV p. 155. Bookseller Inventory # 2624
