Item Description: Chelsea Green Publishing Company, White River Jct, Vermont, U.S.A., 2002. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: As New. Bednar, Deanne (illustrator). Seventh Printing. 8" X 10". 346 Pages Indexed. A cob cottage is the ultimate expression of ecological design. Made of the oldest, most available materials imaginable -- earth, clay, sand, straw, nd water -- cob houses are not only compatible with their surroundings, they are their surroundings, literally rising up from the earth. There are no forms as in rammed earth, no bricks as in adobe, no additives or chemicals, and no need for machinery. Cob is not new and not untested. Its viability has been thoroughly proved, all over the world, for centuries and probably millennia. But despite great public enthusiasm for natural building, most how-to building books hardly mention this common, almost universal, building technique. This book was written to fill that gap. Even today between a third and a half of us humans live in houses of unbaked earth. There are lavish adobe haciendas in Latin America, rammed earth mansions in France, earth-brick palaces in China. There are ten-story apartments in Yemen, old fortified monasteries in the Middle East, puddled and hand shaped and press bricked and foot-stomped earthen buildings from near the Arctic Circle in Norway to the tip of Chile and the polar end of New Zealand. Adobe is well known to most of us. Rammed earth is increasingly in the news again. Even press brick, poured adobe, and wattle and daub are terms we have heard over the years. Yet the simplest, most accessible earth-building technique was until very recently almost unknown. Nobody had built cob in North America for 150 years, or in the British Isles since the 1920s. The continuity of master builders had like a dead language, been lost. In a single decade , books such as this have changed all that 8" X 10". Bookseller Inventory # 15456

Item Description: Chelsea Green Publishing Co, United States, 2002. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 254 x 203 mm. Brand New Book. Are you ready for the Cob Cottage? This is a building method so old and so simple that it has been all but forgotten in the rush to synthetics. A cob cottage, cobb, however, might be the ultimate expression of ecological design, a structure so attuned to its surroundings that its creators refer to it as an ecstatic house. The authors build a house the way others create a natural garden. They use the oldest, most available materials imaginable--earth, clay, sand, straw, and water--and blend them to redefine the future (and past) of building. Cob (the word comes from an Old English root, meaning lump ) is a mixture of non-toxic, recyclable, and often free materials. Building with cob requires no forms, no cement, and no machinery of any kind. Builders actually sculpt their structures by hand. Building with earth is nothing new to America; the oldest structures on the continent were built with adobe bricks. Adobe, however, has been geographically limited to the Southwest. The limits of cob are defined only by the builder s imagination.Cob offers answers regarding our role in Nature, family and society, about why we feel the ways that we do, about what s missing in our lives. Cob comes as a revelation, a key to a saner world. Cob has been a traditional building process for millennia in Europe, even in rainy and windy climates like the British Isles, where many cob buildings still serve as family homes after hundreds of years. The technique is newly arrived to the Americas, and, as with so many social trends, the early adopters are in the Pacific Northwest. Cob houses (or cottages, since they are always efficiently small by American construction standards) are not only compatible with their surroundings, they ARE their surroundings, literally rising up from the earth. They are full of light, energy-efficient, and cozy, with curved walls and built-in, whimsical touches. They are delightful. They are ecstatic. Bookseller Inventory # AA99781890132347
