Item Description: 1826. [COOPER, James Fenimore]. The Last of the Mohicans: A Narrative of 1767. By the Author of "The Pioneers." Philadelphia: H. C. Carey & I. Lea, 1826. Two volumes. xi,[1],282; [2],[blank],289,[1]pp. plus terminal blank. Original drab paper boards, with expert restorations to the spines and spine labels, top edges rough trimmed, fore and bottom edges wholly untrimmed. Moderate foxing throughout, title of second volume tanned, early ink signature in top margin of each title, otherwise a very good, untrimmed set, with the blanks, including the blank conjugate to the title in the second volume present. Enclosed in cloth wrappers with gilt labels, and a folding clamshell box (broken at one joint). The box bears the bookplate and booklabel of collector / actor / translator Jean Hersholt, and the later bookplate of Carol and William Simon. First edition of one of the landmarks of early American literature. In this set, as with all copies, in volume one, page 89 is mispaged 93 and chapter XVI is miscaptioned XIV. The folio is present on page 71 (no sequence), and the final 'i' on p. vii is not present (sequence not determined, but it is likely that the final 'i' may have dropped out in the course of the print run). In volume II, the copyright notice is in BAL's state A (sequence undetermined and likely the result of multiple setting rather than correction), and as noted above, the blank conjugate following the title is intact -- it was frequently removed from copies being bound. "The most famous of the Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumpo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic in the lives and characters of the white men who made the American wilderness their home . The novel glorified for many generations of readers, in England, France, Russia, and at home some aspects of American life that were unique to our cultural history" - Grolier American Hundred. With all correct issue points: Volume I: pagination present on page 71, page 89 misnumbered 93, chapter XVI misnumbered XIV; Volume II: State A of the copyright notice. This copy has the final "i" is present on page vii in Volume I, but BAL 3833 states that "examination suggests that the folio was correctly set and the 'i' may have dropped out during the printing. Sequence not determined." Grolier One Hundred Influential American Books, 34: "This is the . most famous of the Leatherstocking Tales, and the first in which the scout Natty Bumppo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic and romantic in the lives and characters of the white men who made the American wilderness their home."; Johnson: High Spots of American Literature, pp. 24-25; Spiller & Blackburn 7. This book deals specifically with the 1757 Anglo-French War and particularly the aftermath of the Huron massacre. Contemporary bookplate of William H. Groome on the front pastedown of the second volume, along with an early twentieth century bookseller label, with Groome's name written on the verso of the title page of the first volume and on the recto of the blank following the title page of the second volume, both dated 1826. William H. Groome was from Easton, Maryland, served in the War of 1812, and was a pew holder at the Old Marsh Church. Rather light dampstaining to the outer margins of some pages at the beginning and end of each volume; moderate foxing throughout. An attractive example of this American literary landmark. Item Description: 1826. [in the original boards] A Narrative of 1757. By the Author of "The Spy," "The Pilot," "The Pioneers," &c. &c. In Three Volumes. London: John Miller, 1826. Original drab paper-covered boards with (early but not original) brown paper spines and printed labels. First English Edition, published in three volumes just two months after the two-volume Philadelphia edition. This is the novel for which Cooper is best known today: THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS was the second-published of the five "Leather-Stocking Tales," (the series name derived from the nickname of the hero, Natty Bumppo, so-called because of his long deerskin leggings). The first of the five to be published had been THE PIONEERS, in 1823; however, their sequence in terms of plot is THE DEERSLAYER, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, THE PATHFINDER, THE PIONEERS and THE PRAIRIE. The hero, known by the name "Hawk-eye" in this novel, "is shown as a young man approaching the zenith of his skill as a wilderness hunter and scout during the French and Indian Wars. In this best known novel of the saga, Natty as Hawk-eye develops into the epic hero of American literature." [UVa]~These volumes, remarkably, are still uncut in their original paper-covered boards (which were meant to be temporary); at some point (apparently long ago) the spines and labels were aptly restored, as is typically necessary for such fragile bindings. Otherwise the volumes show only minor edge-wear. The first and third volumes are lacking the front free endpaper; the half-title is present only in the second and third volumes, because none was originally provided for the first volume. The leaves still have their original uncut edges, and are unusually free of foxing for paper approaching its 200th year. At the top of each front cover and on the front paste-down of Vol. I is the signature of [Baron] Charles de Nagell (Peerage # 335169), probably the initial owner. See Blanck 3833 (saying that the American edition came out in January and the English in March, noting their sources); UVa (Barrett) 6 (this English edition is noted but is not listed in detail, though the American and French editions are; UVa says that the English edition came out six months after the American edition, but without noting reasons for that statement); Spiller & Blackburn p. 44. Item Description: 1826. [COOPER, JAMES FENIMORE]. The Last of the Mohicans; a Narrative of 1757. London: John Miller, 1826. 3 vols. xi, [1], 287 p.; 276 p.; [2], 295 p. Half titles lacking. Near-contemporary half calf, gilt. Name clipped from top margin of title page of vol. 1, stain on 3:192-3 from laid-in paper, binding lightly rubbed at extremities, but a very good copy. First English edition of the most famous of Cooper's Leatherstocking Tales, and one of the great classics of early American literature. It was the first of Cooper's novels in which the scout Natty Bumppo was made the symbol of all that was wise, heroic, and romantic in the lives and characters of the American frontiersmen. While Cooper's "noble savages," particularly Uncas and Chingachgook, would gain little credence today, for generations of readers in America, England, France, and elsewhere, they represented a unique aspect of life in early America. Today, The Last of the Mohicans is probably the earliest American novel still read for entertainment. This is a particularly nice copy in a near-contemporary binding, though, as usual, it was bound without the half titles. Bookseller Inventory # 14738
