Item Description: Bodley Head, 1921. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. An exceptionally fine first edition of Agatha Christie's debut novel introducing Hercule Poirot. Octavo, original brown cloth without the stains or tears one typically encounters. At the start of the First World War, Christie "returned to the Voluntary Aid Detachment nursing she had taken up and the dispensary work that followed. It was during lulls in the dispensary that she began a detective story. Seeking some point of originality for a sleuth in the Sherlock Holmes tradition she thought of the Belgian refugees in Torquay and Hercule Poirot, retired Belgian policeman evacuated to England, was born, though it was not until 1920 and six unsuccessful trips to publishers that he saw the light of day in The Mysterious Affair at Styles, a book that shows little indeed of the prentice hand" (DNB). "Poirot was created for the reader who identified with an individual detective a private detective who relied on his 'gray cells" (Woellert & Cassiday, 116). "Happily, Poirot richly merited the attention he received. For when he is at the top of his form few fictional sleuths can surpass the amazing little Belgian either for individuality or ingenuity He still comes closer to symbolizing his profession in the popular mind than any story-book detective since Holmes Agatha Christie is easily one of the half-dozen most accomplished and entertaining writers in the modern field" (Haycraft, 131-33). First published in New York and Toronto in 1920. Barzun & Taylor 780. Penciled owner signature. Cheaply printed and bound, surviving copies of this work are almost always found in deplorable condition, due to paper shortages after WW I. This is by far the best copy to come on the market in the last two decades, and should be considered the cornerstone of any serious rare mystery novel collection. The book is internally fresh and free from foxing, with only a small pencil ownership signature. Without the extremely rare Dust Jacket. The book is housed in a custom half marocco clamshell box. Item Description: Bodley Head, 1921. First edition. Original brown cloth with black titles and Art Deco design. Top edge stained blue. A near fine copy with beautifully clean cloth and distinct lettering and design. There are a couple of small production blemishes to the rear cover and some minor fraying to part of the rear joint, but beyond that looks barely handled. Internally fresh and clean and most unusually free from foxing. An exceptional copy. The author's first novel, which sees the first appearance of M. Hercule Poirot. Due to the wartime restrictions this book was made from poor quality stock which browns very easily. The boards are also very fragile with the majority of copies surviving only in a disbound or heavily repaired state. Copies as well preserved as this one are very rarely encountered. Item Description: John Lane, New York / Ryerson, New York / Toronto, 1920. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Canadian edition( using the JOHN LANE , NEW YORK SHEETS) ;PRECEDES THE UK FIRST! This first book by Agatha Christie and first appearance of Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920 by John Lane, New York and subsequently in the U.K. by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1921.VERY GOOD without the rare jacket.THE CANADIAN FIRST EDITION obviously PRECEDES THE BRITISH FIRST EDITION and USED THE FIRST U.S. EDITION PLATES with a separately printed title page. The title page is integral and not tipped in. Ryerson Press probably printed very few copies of this book to secure Canadian copyright. The number of copies probably was fewer than 300 based on other printings by Ryerson, at that time, of established authors (e.g. Lucy Gayheart by Willa Cather, 1935).The spine bears the title The Mysterious Affair At Styles ; Christie and The Ryerson Press at the foot. At the base of the title page , underneath the title " The Mysterious Affair at Styles,( then a decorative printed device), A Detective Story by Agatha Christie " is printed : Toronto: The Ryerson Press - New York:John Lane Company-London: John Lane , The Bodley Head; MCMXX. The book has beige cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in dark green. Decorations are different than the British edition. Cloth is rubbed and worn at extremities, slightly tanned at spine. ; front hinge starting; previous owners ink name and address ( Manitoba) to front paste down.Very good overall. LAID IN is a TYPED LETTER SIGNED (in pen) by the author to a fan in 1972 thanking him for his comments and his appreciation of re-reading of one of her books. Letter is a Royal Post Air Mail Letter. Christie has typed her " Winterbrook House" return address in the appropriate space and again at the top of her reply. Letter has been folded in the appropriate spots and is a little rough around the edges where it would have been opened by the recipient. Digital photos on request. A very RARE item. For the serious Christie completist! FREE INSURED SHIPPING by COURIER !Please contact the dealer if you have questions. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # JD2956

Item Description: Ryerson Press,, New York/Toronto:, 1920. Book Condition: Good. First Canadian edition of her first book. Published using the sheets of the first U.S edition (published by John Lane) and preceding the British first edition, published in 1921. The first appearance of Hercule Poirot. The book has an integral Ryerson title page; we assume it was a small printing. It appears to us that it was rebacked and has new endpapers. The rebacking was a pretty good job and not obvious. Internally clean with no foxing. In a specially made clamshell box printed in black lettering on spine and front. Bookseller Inventory # 52258

Brown cloth boards with green lettering and graphics on spine and top of front board. Top and base of spine shows slight thinning. There are four threads at the top and base of the spine, measuring 1/8 of an inch, which have been broken horizontally and vertically, probably due to shelfwear. The book has had no restoration. Light foxing throughout. Front and rear hinges are tight and intact. No pages torn. Pages 290, 292 and 294 show soft crease folds - the result of page marking. Minor soiling on the front board and spine. Copyright, 1920, by John Lane Company (New York). Author's rare first book which introduced Hercule Poirot. 296 pgs. 1A. Bookseller Inventory # 1812

Item Description: London: The Bodley Head, 1941., 1941. Author's first novel, reissued. Octavo., pp. 296. Publisher's red cloth, titles in black to spine. Pictorial dustwrapper illustrated by H.T. Warren, shows titles and a horrified face in the shadows to front cover, titles to spine, and publisher's advertisements to rear cover; unclipped, originally priced at 2s 6d. Binding is slightly rubbed, a little cocked and shaken, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean and free from spotting. Rare in the dust wrapper, which is rubbed and a little dusty, with some loss to corners and at the base of the spine, removing the "ad" from Bodley Head. The first appearance of the cerebral Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, perhaps the only rival to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes for the position of greatest fictional detective in the public imagination. This novel, Christie's first, also introduces two other favourite characters, Captain Hastings and Inspector Japp. Truly a tour de force, and the best place to start improving the little grey cells with a little light detective work.
