Item Description: John Lane, New York / Ryerson, 1920. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Canadian edition( using the JOHN LANE , NEW YORK SHEETS) ;PRECEDES THE UK FIRST! This first book by Agatha Christie and first appearance of Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920 by John Lane, New York and subsequently in the U.K. by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1921.VERY GOOD without the rare jacket.THE CANADIAN FIRST EDITION obviously PRECEDES THE BRITISH FIRST EDITION and USED THE FIRST U.S. EDITION PLATES with a separately printed title page. The title page is integral and not tipped in. Ryerson Press probably printed very few copies of this book to secure Canadian copyright. The number of copies probably was fewer than 300 based on other printings by Ryerson, at that time, of established authors (e.g. Lucy Gayheart by Willa Cather, 1935).The spine bears the title The Mysterious Affair At Styles ; Christie and The Ryerson Press at the foot. At the base of the title page , underneath the title " The Mysterious Affair at Styles,( then a decorative printed device), A Detective Story by Agatha Christie " is printed : Toronto: The Ryerson Press - New York:John Lane Company-London: John Lane , The Bodley Head; MCMXX. The book has beige cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in dark green. Decorations are different than the British edition. Cloth is rubbed and worn at extremities, slightly tanned at spine. ; front hinge starting; previous owners ink name and address ( Manitoba) to front paste down.Very good overall. Digital photos on request. A very RARE item. For the serious Christie completist! FREE INSURED SHIPPING by COURIER !Please contact the dealer if you have questions. Bookseller Inventory # JD2956

Light foxing throughout. Front and rear hinges are tight and intact. No pages torn. Pages 290, 292 and 294 show soft crease folds - the result of page marking. Minor soiling on the front board and spine. Copyright, 1920, by John Lane Company (New York). Author's rare first book which introduced Hercule Poirot. 296 pgs. Bookseller Inventory # 1812

Item Description: Ryerson Press,, New York/Toronto:, 1920. Book Condition: Good. First Canadian edition of her first book. Published using the sheets of the first U.S edition (published by John Lane) and preceding the British first edition, published in 1921. The first appearance of Hercule Poirot. The book has an integral Ryerson title page; we assume it was a small printing. It appears to us that it was rebacked and has new endpapers. The rebacking was a pretty good job and not obvious. Internally clean with no foxing. In a specially made clamshell box printed in black lettering on spine and front. Bookseller Inventory # 52258

Item Description: Dodd Mead, 1926. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Copyright 1920, First Printing (no references to subsequent printings on copyright page which just has the 1920 copyright date and 1926 date printed on title page), no list of other Agatha Christie books to left of title page, off-white endpapers, green boards with orange lettering, with 1928/29 era 1st Grosset & Dunlap original dust jacket (dust jacket has lists of other G&D on the reverse side of the DJ - a feature only found on G&D dust jackets printed before 1931). A BIT OF PUBLISHING HISTORY: THIS IS AGATHA CHRISTIE'S 1ST BOOK WHICH WAS FIRST PUBLISHED BY JOHN LANE IN THE U.S. IN 1920 (SUBSEQUENTLY PUBLISHED IN THE U.K. IN 1921). IN 1921, CHRISTIE CHANGED HER U.S. PUBLISHER TO DODD MEAD (WHOM REMAINED HER U.S. PUBLISHER UP UNTIL HER DEATH IN 1976). DODD MEAD OBTAINED THE PRINTING RIGHTS TO STYLES AND ISSUED ITS 1ST PRINTING IN 1926 (THIS BOOK) AND THEN ISSUED 3 MORE PRINTINGS IN 1927 (DISTINQUISHABLE BY THE 1927 DATE ON THE TITLE PAGE AND THE REPRINTING REFERENCES ON THE COPYRIGHT PAGE). AS WAS DODD MEAD'S USUAL PRACTICE, IT THEN SOLD THE REPRINTING RIGHTS ALONG WITH THE PRINTING PLATES TO GROSSET & DUNLAP WHO ISSUED ITS 1ST REPRINT IN 1928/29 (THE SOURCE OF THIS DUST JACKET). THE 1926 DODD MEAD 1ST WITH ORIGINAL DUST JACKET IS EXTREMELY SCARCE (I HAVE ONLY EVER SEEN 2 OF THEM IN OVER 20 YEARS OF COLLECTING) AND SELL FOR AROUND $3,000-$5,000 ON THE RARE OCCASION WHEN THEY COME UP FOR SALE. THE 1928/29 GROSSET & DUNLAP EDITION USED THE SAME DODD MEAD PRINTING PLATES (SO THE BOOK WAS THE SAME SIZE AND THE SAME DJ SPINE/FRONT COVER ART AS THE DODD MEAD DJ, SO THE GROSSET & DUNLAP DJ FITS ON A DODD MEAD BOOK. THE 1926 STYLES 1ST IS ITSELF VERY RARE WITHOUT A DUST JACKET (ONLY THE DODD MEAD 1ST OF MURDER ON THE LINKS IS HARDER TO FIND), AND IT WITH A 1928/29 DUST JACKET IS THE ONLY PRACTICAL/AFFORDABLE WAY TO OWN A "STYLES" 1ST WITH ORIGINAL DUST JACKET. Book appears unread with no creased page corners, no former ownership markings or used bookstore stamps inside, no foxing to pages, endpapers, or outer page edges, very slight dust soiling/age darkening to outer page edges, perfectly clean original endpapers with no stains, markings or erasure marks, no internal spine splits at hinges, no spine lean, no wear to board edges or spine tips or board corners (hint of wear to bottom right corner to front board only), no bumped board corners, no spine fading or darkening, no soiling/staining to outer boards, stress mark to top right corner on cover (this was a manufacturing defect with the cardboard underneath the cloth covering as opposed to a board crease as there is no corresponding crease on the inside front board). THE HIGH GRADE OF THIS BOOK IS DUE TO THE FACT THAT IT USED TO BE MY PERSONAL COPY (I RECENTLY FOUND A LOWER GRADE COPY THAT IS A REVIEW EDITION) Dust jacket has shallow chipping along edges with a couple of repaired tears near the spine tips, otherwise no chipping or tearing or creasing, slight wear to front flap crease, no spine fade, slight wear to left/right of spine, edge wear, no dust rubbing to rear panel, no soiling or staining (water spot on spine), age yellowing to rear panel. Overall a FINE- book in VG-/VG condition dust jacket (not price clipped) of a very rare 1920s era U.S. Agatha Christie 1st Dodd Mead printing with original DJ. I have a number of other U.K. and U.S. Agatha Christie 1st printing hardcover books up for sale. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-7133255269
