Item Description: New York: John Lane Company, 1920. First edition. Original pale brown cloth with dark green lettering on the upper cover and spine. Bookplates of Florence and Edward Kaye and Charles Sommers to the front pastedown. A very good copy indeed, with a little fraying to the spine ends and corners, but a clean and generally crisp copy. Internally very fresh. The true first edition of Christie's very scarce first book, featuring the first appearance of Hercule Poirot. It was published by the Bodley Head's American arm some five months before they issued the UK edition. Small numbers will have been issued and the the book is of cheap production meaning that well preserved copies are now infrequently seen in commerce. Bookseller Inventory # 33651

Item Description: London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1921., 1921. First British Edition. Under the publishing data for London the title page has New York: John Lane Company, but the verso states "Printed from electrotype plates by Wm. Clowes & Sons, Ltd, London" . Very Good Plus copy with slightest rubbing to spine ends, a few slight indentations and darkenings to the boards, a name in pencil on the front free endpaper; some tanning to large portions of the endpapers, as though acidic paper had been placed there at some point. There is a glueing peculiarity: the front free endpaper is glued to about a quarter inch of the following page (the half-title) down by the gutter; the rear free endpaper is glued to the last page of text by about 1/8 of an inch. How common this was in the edition as a whole we lack the experience to say. The top edge stain is a bit uneven. We have tried to describe the faults; hopefully they do not conceal the virtue that this copy looks hardly touched over its 90 plus years. No dust jacket. The Canadian and US editions appeared first, but we believe there are some who would be pleased to possess the uncommon first British edition of the first novel by this very British writer. Item Description: John Lane, New York / Ryerson, New York / Toronto, 1920. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. First Canadian edition( using the JOHN LANE , NEW YORK SHEETS) ;PRECEDES THE UK FIRST! This first book by Agatha Christie and first appearance of Hercule Poirot, was published in 1920 by John Lane, New York and subsequently in the U.K. by John Lane, The Bodley Head in 1921.VERY GOOD without the rare jacket.THE CANADIAN FIRST EDITION obviously PRECEDES THE BRITISH FIRST EDITION and USED THE FIRST U.S. EDITION PLATES with a separately printed title page. The title page is integral and not tipped in. Ryerson Press probably printed very few copies of this book to secure Canadian copyright. The number of copies probably was fewer than 300 based on other printings by Ryerson, at that time, of established authors (e.g. Lucy Gayheart by Willa Cather, 1935).The spine bears the title The Mysterious Affair At Styles ; Christie and The Ryerson Press at the foot. At the base of the title page , underneath the title " The Mysterious Affair at Styles,( then a decorative printed device), A Detective Story by Agatha Christie " is printed : Toronto: The Ryerson Press - New York:John Lane Company-London: John Lane , The Bodley Head; MCMXX. The book has beige cloth covered boards, lettered and decorated in dark green. Decorations are different than the British edition. Cloth is rubbed and worn at extremities, slightly tanned at spine. ; front hinge starting; previous owners ink name and address ( Manitoba) to front paste down.Very good overall. Digital photos on request. A very RARE item. For the serious Christie completist! FREE INSURED SHIPPING by COURIER !Please contact the dealer if you have questions. Bookseller Inventory # JD2956

Item Description: Ryerson Press,, New York/Toronto:, 1920. Book Condition: Good. First Canadian edition of her first book. Published using the sheets of the first U.S edition (published by John Lane) and preceding the British first edition, published in 1921. The first appearance of Hercule Poirot. The book has an integral Ryerson title page; we assume it was a small printing. It appears to us that it was rebacked and has new endpapers. The rebacking was a pretty good job and not obvious. Internally clean with no foxing. In a specially made clamshell box printed in black lettering on spine and front. Bookseller Inventory # 52258

Brown cloth boards with green lettering and graphics on spine and top of front board. Top and base of spine shows slight thinning. Minor soiling on the front board and spine. Copyright, 1920, by John Lane Company (New York). Author's rare first book which introduced Hercule Poirot. 296 pgs. 1A. Bookseller Inventory # 1812

Item Description: Agatha Christie/Planet Three Collection 2000-2004. ALL AS NEW, 2004. The COMPLETE set of 85 separate novels. Pictorial hardbacks with gilt or silver lettering on the front covers and spines. Each book has plain coloured boards with a small photographic insert indicating the title. All in perfect condition, no Dws as issued. * Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, DBE (September 15, 1890- January 12, 1976), was the doyen of British crime fiction. The world`s best-known mystery writer and, apart from William Shakespeare, is the all-time best-selling author of any genre. Her books have sold over two billion copies in the English language and another billion in over 45 foreign languages (as of 2003). As an example of her broad appeal, she is the all-time best-selling author in France, with over 40 million copies sold in French (as of 2003) versus 22 million for Emile Zola, the nearest contender. She is famously known as the `Queen of Crime` and is, arguably, the most important and innovative writer in the development of the English mystery novel. This is a scarce and highly collectable display / investment set of all her novels, plus autobiography. Highly attractive. Bookseller Inventory # 118212

Item Description: London: The Bodley Head, 1941., 1941. Author's first novel, reissued. Octavo., pp. 296. Publisher's red cloth, titles in black to spine. Pictorial dustwrapper illustrated by H.T. Warren, shows titles and a horrified face in the shadows to front cover, titles to spine, and publisher's advertisements to rear cover; unclipped, originally priced at 2s 6d. Binding is slightly rubbed, a little cocked and shaken, with some bumping to corners. Internally clean and free from spotting. Rare in the dust wrapper, which is rubbed and a little dusty, with some loss to corners and at the base of the spine, removing the "ad" from Bodley Head. The first appearance of the cerebral Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, perhaps the only rival to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes for the position of greatest fictional detective in the public imagination. This novel, Christie's first, also introduces two other favourite characters, Captain Hastings and Inspector Japp. Truly a tour de force, and the best place to start improving the little grey cells with a little light detective work.
